No problem. I've been learning about the theory of radical care in one of my classes lately. Instead of assuming things and getting angry over it (like you're immature and incapable of recognizing yourself as independent from Gaga since you identify too strongly, thus becoming defensive at perceived slights against her), you show concern for the situations in which this reality has arisen. For example, my friend fell asleep in class the other day. Instead of getting angry, my professor asked how late he had been working and if he needed to leave early and if he needed any food. So figuring that some sort of insecurity and desire to escape has probably forced you to identify with Gaga and become defensive on her behalf, I wanted to reach out in case you needed someone to talk to.

Things will get better and one day you will feel complete without having to live vicariously through someone else and be petty on their behalf. I'm sorry, but whoever defends Sondheim has to be batsh*t crazy. Do people even know what the word TRAVESTY means? He's such a purist, and he's so neurotic, that anything she does on a stage that even remotely resembles Broadway will insult him.

Even if you were to be nitpicky, Gaga's performance was - technically, at the very least - good enough. To Sondheim, artists like Idina Menzel, who notoriously gave us a technically MEDIOCRE performance at the Oscars, are okay 24/7.

To him, being a true adept of a certain style and relating deeply with the original material has more value than actually doing a good performance. If Julie Andrews had performed instead and burped between verses, he'd think she was just fine. 

Calling Gaga's performance a "travesty" is so unnecessary, so untrue and so controversial that it can't even be taken seriously. I'm not saying Gaga was PERFECT or INSANELY GOOD at the Oscars. But it was, at the very least, a decent performance.

.....wtf? You do realize you're doing the EXACT SAME THING right? People have valid criticisms of Sondheim but because he means a lot to you, you're making it sound like it's disrespectful to call him out.

Ouch! That cuts....

People don't tend to appreciate "versatility" unless it is done well though. I loved the performance.  There was a hint at lack of breath control at the end of certain phrases, which her smoking certainly won't help but I thought it was fantastic.

I'm just glad Julie Andrews liked it really.

​Can you give a specific example of this? I am curious because this was  pretty much the one critique i have seen from commenters. Some people also said her phrasing wasn't good. I don't really know what that means. Is that the ability to hold out an entire sentence or section of the song without having to take a breath to early?

​I don't even understand how he though Gaga didn't sing with emotion or connect with the songs. I thought she did great at conveying emotion (especially since she had to shift from song to song every 45 or 10 seconds). With her voice, facial expressions, and body movements, it seemed to me that she was living through the songs. I even specifically said this to myself while watching her. It wasnt an afterthought. It was obvious to me that she was conveying emotion well. 

 

One of my favorite qualities of Gaga is her great emotions passion while singing.
