Puerto Rico considers fining parents of obese children up to $800

Good initiative. But if it's genetic?

Then you could fine them for lying.

People be like, "I'm fat because of genetics. I eat nothing but vegetables and hate meat!" and then you look at their facebook and they just posted a delicious meal of cheesy pasta with a few springs of parsley as their "vegetable."

It's almost never genetic and if it is, then the person saying it actually has a name for what's wrong with them. Because the diseases you get that might cause obesity do not just cause obesity.

This sounds nice... on paper, but what if these people can't really afford "healthy" food? They are basically giving them two options: be fined or starve your child so you won't get fined. This is not the way to do this imo.

I actually had a discussion about this a while back and I agree. You can't force someone to eat healthy and just expect them to obey. We are not wired to drop unhealthy habits cold-turkey. So then they pull the "I can't control it" card. As someone with an actual mitochondrial disorder and yet was able to both gain and lose weight with enough determination, I can say that "genetics" is a damn cop-out.

Nod if you wanna make love with the enemy. ❤

What the fck is this ****? I doubt people who can't afford eating healthy (oops, surprise, eating healthy is expensive!) can afford a 800$ fine. Also what are you gonna do? Force your children to exercise? I understand that there should be a way to encourage people (specially children) on eating healthy, but this only promotes the fat stigma in society.

We going to boo
