Oooh interesting! Then it can't be due to the contact aspect nor the lack of veil

You mean why they did not shake her hand? if she went by herself they would have shaked her hands and im sure the king did when they first met but there is a line full of people and they usually only shake hands with the main person wich is the president in this case.

You can actually see her handshaking the king 1 minute into the video:

Well, not ME. I'm not my country.

I'd say it makes the country opportunist and Capitalist as it's always been. There are always trade offs. The US is on its way to energy independence anyway. Hopefully in the near future the US has less ties with the Middle East.

If nations picked and choosed relations over moral issues no one would have relations with each other or we wouldn't live in a global world :smh: It's sick but it is what it is.

Well your trying to find excuses for what the US is doing and saying this is how things are.. it seems like you dont want to live or fight for a moral world. If this is how things are then dont complain about anything happening in the world. If some people snubbed her its because in funerals you have to wear black out of respect for the dead.

It's not the same moment in which they're referred to the article, the scene in the photo is different, but the article says that she has been snubbed by some members, not all ;)

I doubt that but if some people snubbed her its because in funerals you have to wear black out of respect for the dead.

I don't think it's right that the US has relations with these people but that's just how things are because of oil. I'm not finding excuses. I'm just saying it how it is. But no Western nation is as socially barbaric as these people. I feel like you calling the US barbaric or any other nation minimizes the barbarism of these people... I felt like that's what you were trying to do.

i don't think it's a double standard, you're conflating two separate points rather than demonstrating hypocrisy about the same thing. one is about assimilation within a country as a citizen, and the other is a US representative visiting another country. michelle is an envoy of the united states to saudi arabia. that's not what immigrants are when they immigrate.

I don't see why the time period of a person's stay in country dictates the culture they should respect?

I don't think the veil is the reason why she wasn't given handshakes, it's because in those countries men and women aren't supposed to have physical contact I believe  And I wouldn't say she's "snubbed", because they did acknowledge her as politely as they could (within their rules) via nods

This. And hypocrisy of some members. :smh: She's praised for not following or not respecting the culture, then those same people preach about muslim woman's "obligation" to follow European or US culture in everything and get rid off "backward" clothing.

And women forbidden to enroll in higher education? lol what?

finally some ggd members who are talking real sense.

I read about this in the newspaper this morning. I honestly think she did the right thing. She was still respectful of their culture and way of life. I myself do not agree with those particular customs and would have done exactly what she did if I was in her shoes.

but that's not the discussion we were having. really, that doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with what i was talking about.

and that quote by haroon has been disproved. you should go through the whole thread.

but isn't the main difference between a citizen assimilating within a country and a US representative visiting that country the length of stay in that country? Reading through as we speak.

no, the main difference is citizenship.

a citizen has rights and duties to the country of which they are a citizen. if they intend to subvert these they might be a fifth column. you should probably google it for further information, i don't have anything interesting to say right now.

no worries. i have always thought the main criterion of getting residence or citizenship is the length of stay. my bad.
