So funny, a jazz album outsold Iggy, Lana, and soon Ariana.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. And let's be honest, C2C isn't even that well known with the GP yet it has sold more than TNC and pretty soon ME. And on top of all that Barbara is closing in on 1 million and has outsold almost every release this year. I really hope this makes an impression on the powerful people behind the scenes in the music business- to show them that making manufactured music to cater to audiences doesn't always work. Let artists express their creative freedom and let the genuine connection from the public bring in the revenue.

What I'm most excited about is seeing C2C outsell ARTPOP. I definitely think it's going to happen. Kind of makes me sad though cause it makes me think of the loss potential that AP could have had

Ladey Gagz

RIAA's certifications are based on sales + the copies that are still sitting on the shops' shelves. What's so hard to understand? :awkney:

Yes I know that. That's why I never said that she sold 1mil copies I just always said that it was plat

Guys I just read that My everything went platinum because of STREAMING+shipments.(Because of the new system of RIAA)

then paid for it   :bye:

RIAA certifications are paid in the form of an audit certification fee. They're neither given for free nor are automatically given. A label has to apply first and then pay for their releases to be certified as gold, platinum, or multi-platinum. Also, as others have already pointed out, RIAA's certifications for albums are based on shipments, and not on SoundScan sales or stream equivalents. RIAA isn't Billboard.

Some labels are aggressive in applying and paying for these certifications, like Ariana's label, while others are not, like Gaga's. Hence, most of Gaga's RIAA certifications are grossly outdated. Not because RIAA is bias, but rather because the label or Gaga herself is simply not applying. These certifications are useless anyway if the goal is to know how an album sells, especially when Billboard releases SoundScan sales in a weekly basis. They're basically just for bragging rights.

Here's an excerpt from the official website of RIAA itself, explaining how to certify albums:

We are often asked why we don’t just use sales figures from SoundScan. SoundScan measures over-the-counter sales at music retail locations, while the RIAA®'s certification levels are based on unit shipments (minus returns) from manufacturers to a wide range of accounts, including non-retail record clubs, mail order houses, specialty stores, units shipped for Internet fulfillment or direct marketing sales, such as TV-advertised albums. Another difference is that SoundScan's archive only begins in 1991, while the RIAA has tracked artists' sales levels for more than 55 years.

And here's more info about their pricing:

All certification audits are conducted for a fee. If multiple sales levels are simultaneously certified, only one audit certification fee is charged. Companies requesting their initial certification audit must incur any travel expenses by the RIAA®'s independent auditor. The charge for certifications is $350 for RIAA® member companies. Non-members are charged $450 per certification, which must be pre-paid. Companies will be charged the full audit certification fee for any requests that do not meet the Gold® and Platinum® Program requirements.  A 30-day time limit is set for pending certifications. If a full audit cannot be completed within this time, a charge of $100 will be rendered to member companies and $200 to non-member companies.
