We didn’t see this coming. Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic) will debut at #1 on the HITS Album and SPS charts next week, spoiling what looked less than 24 hours ago like a slam dunk for the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrackâ€â€but the marketshare goes to the same place, so Republic can’t complain. What’s more, the surprise mixtape could see first-weekend sales of 500k. Strangely, as of 8am PT, the album has yet to appear on the iTunes chart. But there’s a precedent: It took Beyoncé’s 2013 surprise release several hours before landing at #1.

Beyonce, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna are clearly the key players in the industry right now. Pulling out crazy levels of success. (Rihanna's single is smashing WW for anyone who's wondering why she's on that list).

It's his worst release but hip-hop culture is riding his cock these days so it's no surprise. I downloaded it for free and couldn't even listen to the whole thing. I'm a huge fan of Take Care and before, but he is losing me fast. :manicure:

Is a surprise album release a guaranteed hit now? I can picture more and more artists will do this if the trend of surprise album sales goes on.

These artists have momentum and big fanbases.

Beyonce is a pop legend and Drake is the biggest rap star currently. Not everyone could pull it off. Def not stars like Katy Perry or Lady Gaga (anymore at least).

I see, so Drake has a huge fanbase. Sorry, not really familiar with the hip hop community.

But yeah, not everyone can pull this off, but I can see more artists doing this in attempts of generating impulsive hype for their surprise album.
