Maybe if you lived here, had close friends and family members who were in certain minority groups (where you could get first hand accounts from them) you would understand how very far off some of your opinions on racial relations in the US really are.

 

You can watch media 24/7, but if you don't live it or at least have it intertwined in your life experiences, you are not going to understand fully what is really going on in the communities and neighborhoods across the US.

 

Yet Americans themselves are polarized on racial issues, liberal vs conservative, and a lot of them only read media that agree with their own perspective. If I was born in a Republican state with children of cops as my friends, my lived experiences could point in a vastly different direction than if I was raised in a liberal city. For example, the way some American leftists talk about "white privilege" suggests a lack of personal acquantance with working class whites.

This. I see this often, alleging that there can be no such thing as white privilege because there are poor White Americans. Of course there are, but the privilege goes beyond material wealth.

November 4th was a weird day for me as a Californian, tbh. The liberal bastion that is this state mostly hailed Obama's win, but Californians also (barely) voted for Prop 8. I was like

Well, it depends on the context. If by better off they meant economically, then that is most def not true. Which ties into my post that you quoted. Socially, I'd say there's an argument. We like to think skin color is not really a "thing" anymore, thus a colorblind route is preferred (until it's inconvenient, like someone in a previous Azealia thread who had no qualms in saying "the Black ghetto b---h deserved it". I thought we were colorblind? lol).

I'm not denying there is "black disadvantage."

 

But white privilege is a term that ought to go (especially from the mouths of elite white liberals), because it encourages the trivialization of the problems of poor whites, and suggests that working class whites should identify up rather than down. If you're "privileged" you need to appreciate what you have, rather than worrying about growing class inequality.

 

Plus, not being brutalized by police isn't a privilege, it's a human right - a right that many Canadians and Brits enjoy to a greater extent than US whites. "Privileges" are what prison inmates are granted for good behavior, and can be taken away on a whim.
