It took 2 losing referendums before Quebecois separatism started to fade.

And thank god for that.

Quebec wants indepedence, they deserve it

why do they need it though? what are the issues that quebec has that are attributed to being a part of canada? and how would them gaining independence effect the rest of the people of canada?

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Scottish independence won't come in our lifetime, unfortunately. It is inevitable in the future though (unless a European megastate comes first)

Miss Dolly, please stop saying that Scots who voted No were brainwashed. For a country you claim to care about so much, you should treat its citizens as if they have intelligence and free will. On the contrary, those who voted No showed just how free-thinking they were seeing as the Yes campaign was so aggressive and heavily advertised. Devo-Max is going to take a while to see to, months in fact, just like all laws of its kind. Those involved in its creation took a vow to make the plans a reality. You can't go back on that. Every day I'm hearing about these devolved powers. They will happen, but not immediately. I find it funny how you're saying that the result was a disaster because no promises have been kept and nothing has changed, when independence would have taken a year to be made official and all the intricacies of it would result in the country taking years to properly establish itself. Would you have been piping up the very next day to complain that nothing had changed yet? Government changes take time and nothing happens overnight. Regardless to what the papers are saying about 66% wanting another referendum in 10 years, I can assure you that the majority of the public has moved on fast from this whole messy business and has got back to normality and focusing on the really important things in life. Salmond tried his best to rig the referendum in his favour by allowing 16/17 year olds to vote and disallowing member of the army and disallowing Scots living in the rest of the UK (800,000) to vote. And still it wasn't enough to get independence. I was actually hearing rumours that a future election could disallow over-65's to vote. The SNP's audacity is appalling and unsurprisingly, their alienation of their own people is annoying us and we don't want them.

I don't see what Catalonia could possibly gain from cutting ties with Spain. Neither do I see the benefits for other countries either. Unless there is war, extreme political unrest, dictatorships, etc. going on in your country, I see no reason to break apart and form your own country. So, you don't always get the prime minister/president you want. Cry me a river while I play you a violin. You'll get another shot in 4 years. If that's the biggest problem you have with your country, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. I think countries re-unifying like East and West Germany is proof that being together is always better. You're richer and safer that way.

I find it selfish and ignorant to claim any group of people should have their right to "independence". The whole notion of that is absurd when considering the implications of a splitting state especially with the world as interdependent as it is now.

It would be a travesty and only f*ck up the entire world and how we live in it if we all the sudden allow any place to break away a state, and for what? To f*ck yourself over in the long haul?

Evidently most of these people who support such referendums or declarations fail to consider the various implications and consequences of such an event actually going through and succeeding.

The majority don't want it. That's why the PQ lost two referendum.

They also lost the last provincial election to the Liberals.

Quebec already has tons of autonomy as a Canadian province.

I'd like to see Devo Max for Scotland and the SNP run the place for awhile before anymore Scotttish referendum. Then they won't be able to blame everything on Westminster. They'll have their own political baggage just like any govt.

you seem to be forming your opinions based solely on emotion rather than basing it on knowledge of the issue and repercussions that can come with trying to become an independent country. i'm not saying you're wrong or right about quebec or catalonia gaining independence since i dont know all of the facts about the issue or what the motives for separation even are but taking a side on an issue you arent properly informed on is never a good thing.

also if you're ever having a debate never call the people whose opinion you disagree with "brainwashed". never say anything that could come off as a personal attack whoever you're debating because when things start getting personal the debate suffers because the offended side will be way less likely to concede any points and you just end up screaming your argument at a brick wall and that gets you nowhere

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Economy

This will have no effect though.

I hope that they can get an official referendum when Spain is in a healthier economic state. Many Catalonians are probably biased because they feel that they have to pay for the 'poor' Spanish because they're so rich, which is even worse during a crisis. When Spain gets rid of their 24% unemployment rate, they'll be able to vote based on their pride for their own culture, instead of economic situation (which changes every year).

25% of Albertans support leaving Canada purely for economic reasons

they have natural gas, lots of oil, coal... just about every valuable resource u can think of

Their GDP Per Capita is 50% above National average...

I dont blame regions like this from wanting to seperate from their Countries
