I'm so excited to see the final numbers. I would love a #1 but I would see be very happy for Tony and Gaga if it didn't.

It's a beautiful album. I love it. I can definitely see myself giving it a lot of replay value for the autumn and winter seasons.

Exactly.  And the positive reviews from jazz critics show that Gaga has made it in the jazz world.  I'm so happy for her regardless of the BB outcome.

I live outside the space time continuum.

But Billboard is using SoundScan as their basis? And why are they excluding some retailers if they want to account

for total album sales? I don't get it.

Yes, Billboard is using SoundScan's for their charts since Nielsen, its parent company, has been the recognized authority in consumer research. They don't measure ALL, but most, like in any other form of survey. It's still impossible to track ALL sales, especially the physical ones (i.e. every single sale from each and every retailer in the US). Some stores report, some don't. SoundScan has no control over that. They only count sales from venues reported by the label (since they're the ones which distribute the music).

And they also have certain venue types which are automatically ineligible to be counted (such as libraries, schools, house concerts among others). Bulk purchases are also not counted by SoundScan to avoid chart manipulations. All of these are technically sales, but they're still not counted due to SoundScan's own policies. And as I've said, in addition to these, HDD has no complete access to all retailers reporting to SoundScan. If you're interested, here are the policies of SoundScan with regard to the reporting of venue sales - http://www.nielsen.com/content/dam/corporate/us/en/docs/solutions/measurement/radio/Soundscan-US-Sales-Procedure.pdf

Thanks! I just hope HDD and SoundScan can reconcile their figures to come up with figures close to actual sales.  :haha:

Praying for that number 1 Jazz album.  :excited:

they may not sample the exact same ones?

I dont know. All i know is thag "claimed sales" by record labels and ahipments are always higher than certified sales because its impossible to track every sale and theres a magin for error

There may be something specific HDD samples that billboard doesnt and if that source sells a lot who knows so sometimes the numbers are higher even tho generally speaking BB has higher numbers because it samples more

Exactly. Higher sales don't automatically equate to more retailers reported. It could also mean a small retailer among the list of retailers, for example, has sold a high amount of albums comparable to the combined sales of, let's say, 2-3 stores. And that'll lead to the increase of the final tally. The sales got higher, not because more stores sold it but because there's a reporting store which sold great. Same goes with the other way around. 1000+ more stores may report, but that doesn't equate/ensure to a good number. For all we know, they might just report 5 copies sold each, or even less.
