$4.67 Big Mac can pay for $15/hour workers?

Big Mac's cost $5.50 in Australia, and McDonald's seems to get by on paying the minimum wage of $16.47/h to its workers. So I don't know. On the whole, food here is more expensive and the dollar is worth less. But not 3 times less (and the food isn't 3x more). So what gives?

That's just completely ridiculous. To be able to comfortably cover all those costs would require paying McDonalds employees the same salary as like a teacher, journalist, police officer, etc. :wtf: If everyone could easily make a living working in at McDonalds then there would be no need to even go to school or acquire any skills at all. We pay higher salaries to skilled workers because society needs people with skills in different areas in order to operate, so there needs to be an incentive to go through the trouble of learning these skills. Society can't operate on nothing but fast food level workers. :wtf: There would be no doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc.

why shouldn't hard-working people be able to survive and pay their bills? They aren't saying they need to be paid more than anyone else. The whole economic system is ****ed up. $15 is a place to start. Don't get hung up on $15 like it's so ridiculous you have to put down people working in food service. We need to raise the minimum wage and asking for something much higher that would really allow you to get out of debt makes you realize that making half of that is absolutely criminal.

Low middle class still earns a lot in the US. Had they done their best more in school, they'd probably have a better job than working in the McD.

Remember that the McD does not require any skill. You're paid what you're worth. McDonalds jobs are jobs for students who need some extra money to pay their rent, not for 30 year old who should've finished their study and gotten a good job. There's only a very low percentage of people who truly aren't capable of getting a job which pays more than minimum income.

And anyways, there's so much concurrention in the US, that raising the Big Mac price would greatly reduce the amount of people going to the McDonalds, which would again mean that they raised the prices but still earn about as much.

Maybe McDonalds workers should all quit, go to school and get those skills. Who needs McDs anyway?

I'm not sure what America you live in, but the labor situation in the US hasn't been great for years.

this thread greatly upsets me and I'd just suggest googling demographics of minimum wage employees (not all teens and uneducated people who are "too lazy" to go to school). Also the rate of inflation and the original minimum wage. (it would be over $16/hr if it kept up).

Things have gotten so bad for America's poor that putting things back where they belong is looked at like some radical unattainable goal. It's not. We really should be paying people more. We just should.

If you don't have a "high skilled job" to be in the upper high class status or are an elite capitalist in the 1 percent in the US, you're SOL for ever attempting to get near the America Dream. Have a nice life, debt slave.

These people ARE surviving and paying their bills. Will it come easy? No. They will have to make some sacrifices. They won't live in the nicest house, eat the best food, or have leftover money for luxuries. But most of them aren't out on the streets.

And what if a McDonalds employee has 3 kids? Raising those kids will require a lot of money. Should we pay that person 60k a year for working at McDonalds?

Wow McDonald's is so cheap in other countries. Here for a full sized mcdonalds meal with medium or large fries and drink it would cost close to 10 euros especially if you add mayonnaise and ketchup which are at an extra cost :awkney:

I agree.

However, people in the US would rather have people around the world work in sweat shops to get their products cheap (the reason for outsourcing and loss of manufacturing jobs), than let their fellow Americans make a living. America is a self centered nation to begin with, where those in poverty are looked down on. It's sad, but true. People in America also tend to like to blame the victim. I miss the way this country used to be. It seemed more hopeful and that hard work paid off.

People who can't afford kids shouldn't have kids, period.

Wait a minute, how much do you get paid in the USA?  :flop:

Where I live it's already $15 an hour....   :flop:

If it's not that much an hour, hopefully it gets higher.  :flop:

This is just a big " :flop: " to me.

Minimum wage, in Indiana, is 7.25-7.75. It's ridiculous. I can't help but agree and disagree with all points made so far.

The mininum wage in Australia is $16.87 for 21 years old and over, so McDonald's over there rather hire 16 years old because they're paid only $7.98. So if you're 21 years or older, McDonald's would not want to hire you because you cost too much for doing the same job as a 16-year-old.  LOL

Check the Australian wage page.

They aren't asking for 60 thousand a year. Where did you come up with that number?
