theMonster5 74
This article says that if we raise the Big Mac price of $3.99 to $4.67 (68¢ increase) we can afford to pay each fast food worker at least $15/hour in the USA. Is that correct? I will try and do the math to see if it's correct. Each shift require at least 6 people so that's an extra $36 an hour the owner have to spend (CA minimum wage is $9/hour). $36 divide 68¢ mean you have to sell 52 Big Mac EVERY HOUR just to pay the employees $15/hour. I go to this McDonald's everyday around 1:45 pm and maybe they have 10 people dine-in. I usually just order a McChicken, a side salad and a water. So the owner lose money during this hour and every hour they can't sell 52 Big Mac. If it's rush hour like lunchtime or dinnertime, they may have 8 to 10 people working so it would cost the owner $48 to $60 more each hour. So they have to sell like 70 to 88 Big Mac EACH RUSH HOUR just to cover the cost of paying the employee at least $15/hour. So there's a good chance the owner will lose money and go bankrupt and close down the store with the proposed price and wage. What do you think? The the article. theMonster5 74
Why pay McDonalds employees $15 an hour?! You heard of the employees striking on the news? They marched and blocked traffic then get arrested because they demand $15 an hour. Read about the strike.
Spyro 8,438
You heard of the employees striking on the news? They marched and blocked traffic then get arrested because they demand $15 an hour. Read about the strike. Fast food workers are easily the most replaceable workers. There will always be a handful of people on Earth who would be willing to do the job at minimum wage. Even if McDonald's raises the prices of the Big Mac and manages to sell 80 an hour, McDonalds is never going to change, unless you speak with your wallet. Luc 4,776
I don't think so. But there are other ways to minimize costs. They can save on electricity, water, gas, employees, advertizing, making the employees more motivated (improving the environment: get something that improves the smell in the kitchen, make them free to wear what they want to wear, decorate the restaurant with some plants, etc. But anyways, why do McDonalds workers deserve to be paid more? you're paid to what you are capable off. If you want a higher income, you should do something that pays more and requires skills. If you don't have skills, you should've done your best at high school and college more. Goosey 3,017
I'm definitely not here for it. Horrid! I want to pay less for my food, especially at McD's. We must also consider the effect this would have on the US ranking on the Big Mac Index. "I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country."—US President Donald J. theMonster5 74
But anyways, why do McDonalds workers deserve to be paid more? The McDonald's workers said if you have a job you should make enough to pay for rent, healthcare, all your bills, and raise your three kids. lol They said it's a shame that hard-working people at McDonald's are struggling in poverty. pink sushi 4,351
If the minimum wage was increased, that would just cause prices on everything to increase along with it.......so it wouldn't make much of a difference to the people earning minimum wage, as they would still struggle to afford things. And would just piss off all the people who were already making way above minimum wage, as they are still making the same salary, but everything has increased in price.... There will always be a huge gap in income between skilled professionals and people working no skill jobs in stores and restaurants.
Cody Draco 2,531
Thanks for making me crave McDonalds. I'm waiting for Economy to come into this thread and shed some light on how this would affect the U.S. economy. I'm sure it would have a negative effect, but I'm not educated in Economics. This is exactly what I was thinking. theMonster5 74
Here is a story of two McDonald's employees couple. Edgar Gonzalez, 22, of Inglewood is hopeful that the protests will help ensure a better future for his family. He and his girlfriend both work at McDonald's -- she is a manager, while he works in maintenance. Together, they can still barely afford to cover all their expenses, especially with a 4-month-old daughter, he said. "Sometimes we find whatever change there is to buy formula, wipes, diapers," Gonzalez said. He said they often make the choice between paying rent and buying healthy food to eat. Well, if you work at McDonald's you CAN NOT afford to have a baby which cost over $108K to raise to adulthood (assuming they spend $6K/year). Use birth control and wear a condom because you can't afford something that cost over $108K! It's smarter financially if the couple decide to go buy a brand new $50K Mercedes-Benz than to have that baby.

That's just completely ridiculous. To be able to comfortably cover all those costs would require paying McDonalds employees the same salary as like a teacher, journalist, police officer, etc. If everyone could easily make a living working in at McDonalds then there would be no need to even go to school or acquire any skills at all. We pay higher salaries to skilled workers because society needs people with skills in different areas in order to operate, so there needs to be an incentive to go through the trouble of learning these skills. Society can't operate on nothing but fast food level workers. There would be no doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc.
Shadow 6,697
If you don't have a "high skilled job" to be in the upper high class status or are an elite capitalist in the 1 percent in the US, you're SOL for ever attempting to get near the America Dream. Have a nice life, debt slave. http://youtu.be/QPKKQnijnsM Low middle class still earns a lot in the US. Had they done their best more in school, they'd probably have a better job than working in the McD. Remember that the McD does not require any skill. You're paid what you're worth. McDonalds jobs are jobs for students who need some extra money to pay their rent, not for 30 year old who should've finished their study and gotten a good job. There's only a very low percentage of people who truly aren't capable of getting a job which pays more than minimum income. And anyways, there's so much concurrention in the US, that raising the Big Mac price would greatly reduce the amount of people going to the McDonalds, which would again mean that they raised the prices but still earn about as much.
