The Bible does in fact condone slavery, AND beating your slaves. Christianity revolves around the Bible even if you personally don't. 2. The Ancient Greeks didn't believe in a holy book that told them to be homophobic, so that is evidence that with the rise of Christianity there was also a rise in homophobia, meaning that religion brought bigotry to people around the world! I never disputed that the Bible said any of that? And yes, traditional Christianity. I think you can make an argument that contemporary Christianity ignores those aspects of the Bible... the Hillsong-esque churches are the new Christianity. No... that's exactly what I said. Did you read anything I said? Just because some people pick and choose what to believe in doesn't make the "bad parts" of the Bible go away. So if someone were to take the Bible literally they would have to think gay people are an abomination and they would have to condone slavery just like the Bible says in order to stay in line with what the BIBLE teaches. I don't know what you're arguing because I agree with you lol My thing is that I believe the reason the Bible HAS bigotry is because of a select group of early church leaders who decided, "Hey, let's turn on the gays and hate them!" The Roman Catholic Church was in sole possession of the Bible for decades with the general public illiterate and unable to "check and balance" the church. I personally think it was altered, and if not, there's still the fact that humans wrote the Bible and that leaves so much room for error. Therefore, I PERSONALLY (yes, not all of Christendom) believe the Bible isn't reflective of Christians. They would be homophobic regardless if the Bible said it, the same way they were racist even though the Bible DIDN'T say it. I don't think that's why "nice Christians" say that; for me, I consider myself a Christian in the literal sense in that I believe in Jesus Christ. I don't follow the Bible, and I don't believe in half of the things that are in there. And that is definitely how the liberal Christian community is today. My church is incredibly contemporary, and ignores a majority of the Bible. I don't know anyone who would be against anything Jesus is recorded to have said, and thus that's what we follow. I'm not into a religious debate, if you're against Christians, sure, whatever, but not everyone is asinine like the "Christians" in this video. Actually, if you look at it historically, people WEREN'T always homophobic. In Ancient Greece, there were actually offices for gay marriage. It was a common aspect of Athenian life. A ton of Roman Emperors were gay, there's hundreds and hundreds of texts of literature full of stories about homos-xual lives; woman and woman and man and man often lived as family unit. HOWEVER, the hatred of guy/guy girl/girl relationships were started by early church members (including Augustine of Rome). This was *BEFORE* the Bible even existed as we know it today. Thus, their hatred (which I believe is what stemmed the hatred that leaks down today) was independent of the Bible. And to support that, the Bible was written by humans. Jesus didn't write any of it, and Jesus is absent from the entire second half. The problem with Christianity is that people follow the Bible, not Jesus, which is a bit of issue, being as they're supposed to be Christians. Interpret that any way you want, just know not every "nice Christian" is in it for self-dignity. There are some people that can be religious and genuinely care... But all of Jesus' testimony was written by other people supposedly. If you can ignore many things in the Bible because Jesus didn't directly say or mention it or because it was written by man who can edit and lie, is it not possible that those who wrote the books also faked many of Jesus's words or omitted many things? Absolutely, I mentioned that in another post "what Jesus is recorded to have said." It's also possible Jesus did talk about s-xuality and his prophets felt it unnecessary to write down (in which case, if it wasn't important then, it shouldn't be important now). If you look at everything Jesus said, nothing about it is malicious. Most of it makes sense (to me) and nothing is too radical. Be kind to others, respect your parents, love each other, etc. etc. There's contradictions throughout the entire Bible and a lot of it is confusing as hell, but what Jesus said is contrastingly clear. It's very possible they changed what he said, left stuff out, etc. but I almost feel like they wouldn't have? idk. if they did, what he did say still isn't by any means harmful Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

You can talk about how Christians are supposed to love everyone and that these trashy people do not represent christianity, but they do in fact represent what their religion TELLS THEM TO DO. I am not spreading any hatred, I'm only pointing out what THE BIBLE SAYS. I'm not a christian but you throwing all christians together is just as bad as someone throwing all gays together. Not all christians or catholics or muslims are bigots so don't even try. Religion isn't the problem, individuals are. Blame the individuals not the religion. Except when the religion ITSELF is telling these people to go out and be ignorant and evil, sometime we have to point the finger at who is to blame. And sometimes, the individual is not to blame. Can you people seriously not see than religion DOES have to power to make innocent people hateful?!?!?! I am in no way saying that all bigoted theists wouldn't be bigoted if it weren't for religion. All I'm saying is that SOMETIMES religion is a force for evil and not good. Get a grip. I am in no way grouping all religious people together. I feel as though sometimes people hide behind the shadow of the Bible, using it only when it's to their advantage. However, let's not make broad generalizations here about religion itself. This is a painful video to listen to and the focus really should be on the 20 year old who wanted nothing but love and acceptance. In any religion, in any country, why is finding that so hard?
