Free Windows 10 Upgrade Offer Also Applies to Pirates

Microsoft is extending its free Windows 10 upgrade offer even to those who pirated Windows 7 or Windows 8, executive Terry Myerson reveals in a new interview with Reuters.

"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," he said.

A Microsoft representative later confirmed Myerson's comments, adding that the company hopes to "re-engage" with software pirates.

"Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows," the representative told The Verge. "We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies."

As was previously announced, for the first twelve months following Windows 10's launch, PCs running Windows 7 and 8 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the new OS.

This week, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will launch this summer, though the technology giant has not yet pinned down a specific release date.

This week, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will launch this summer, though the technology giant has not yet pinned down a specific release date.

Microsoft has now sent a statement to Polygon that says even if pirates do update their old non-licensed version of Windows to Windows 10, they will still be using an un-licensed software product. Here's Microsoft's new statement:

"We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mis-licensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mis-licensed after the upgrade."

Microsoft expanding Windows 10 to Xiaomi's Android device

"This is an experimental program led by Microsoft, working directly with the Mi fan community in China.

Microsoft is working on a build of Windows 10 specifically for Mi 4 devices. This Windows 10 build will not be running on top of Android nor be available as a dual-boot option. A small number of Mi 4 power users from the Xiaomi Forum in China who choose to take part in this experimental program will have to manually re-flash their Mi 4 devices with this Windows 10 ROM, in the same way they would re-flash other Android ROMs.

At Xiaomi, we are very supportive of users trying new things and we encourage them to do so all the time! That's why all of our devices ship with unlocked bootloader, for example. That's also why Xiaomi welcomes Microsoft team members to interact directly with members of the Xiaomi Forum in China. More details will be announced by Microsoft in the coming months. This program will only be available in China."

Windows 10 TP: New builds every month, next build includes Spartan

As a part of their WinHEC conference for hardware partners, Microsoft announced that new builds for Windows 10 Technical Preview will now come out at least once in a month.

Another new announcement is concerning Microsoft's upcoming browser codenamed Project Spartan - it will be a part of the next Windows 10 TP build (coming to Insiders presumably in April).

The build for March was released this week for Insiders in the Fast ring, so if that's the case for you, don't forget to check for build 10041.

sorry for the news spam guys, just wanted to cover this week's news :emma:
