PopBitch 1,218
P.S.This reviewer (who so much I don't agree with, except the backing vocals) never ever said Gaga was lip-syncing. I thought I must have missed that where everyone kept responding back she's not lip-syncing. So I went back and re-read it, and I was right. He never said she was lip-syncing.He said:"And Gaga's refusal to use back-up singers instead of a backing tape straight out of a Britney Spears concert. For a woman with pipes like Gaga it is a shame. It wasn't until halfway through the 100-minute spectacle that Gaga finally allowed her voice to shine on the powerful Do What U Want, which bizarrely merged into Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You.An impassioned performance of Dope followed, with just Gaga on the piano in fine voice."He is saying she used canned studio vocals throughout like Britney uses, instead of having background singers also. He's not saying she lip-synced, but that her voice was just buried or she was singing along to her backing track and not prominent, instead of shining with background singers, where you could hear her vocal live and distinctive. He never ever said she mimed, just that she used studio backing tracks like Britney used. (Britney mimes hers. Gaga sings with hers) instead of live background singers, where she could have had her vocals shine more, not singing along to a backing track. I don't think he was dissing her if she was not singing choruses during her more dancey choreography. It was about the rest of it.People (and Gaga) are missing his point. He never said lip-sync or mime once.Again, other than that, I think a lot of his review was rubbish. I'm sure the audience loved the concert. It's like he developed an attitude and decided if he wasn't enjoying it they weren't either.
DrewStevens 5,249
The backing track is not that loud, but that's something that only people who have attended to the show know. The quality of the videos is terrible and the sound mix is not made for videos. She sings live, she sings the chorus of every song and the backing track is not that loud. If you think otherwise it's probably because you haven't seen the show.
Whispering 18,865
Beyonce dances her ass off. Beyonce has great background singers on her tour. All pop concerts use backing tracks. That's no secret. Gaga is overusing hers this tour.....Songs are layered and they have to recreate that in places, but Gaga's backing vocals were in the forefront a lot. A lot she just didn't bother to sing and would come in shouting out some lyrics. Then of course she has the choruses she doesn't sing. Sorry, but for someone who brags constantly to the media how she's a live singer, she's not completely a live singer. When you rely on backing tracks to the degree she did this tour, you can hide all of your weaknesses and going flat or not have to sing, letting your backing vocal really carry the song in places. I think she relied on the backing tracks this tour much more as far as letting them do the heavy lifting, and it was noticeable to many, not haters, to fans. I also think she should have had background singers like Beyonce, Pink, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, their recent tours. Backing vocals are used sometimes for layering or choreography and/or choruses, but background singers are also used at times while the singer is singing with no crutch, no loud backiing vocals of her own voice. It makes for a more live concert feeling, not just your own backing vocals used the whole concert.... Gaga is a live singer, just as much as Beyoncé is one. Look...I'm a fan of Beyoncé's and appreciate her talent immensely, but she basically lipped the National Anthem at the Presidential Inauguration! Where was the heavy choreography in that song? ;) Beyoncé sang lines here and there in her Drunk in Love performance at the Grammys! The backing tracks were heavy enough in that performance that when she pulled her mic away you could still hear her singing. She was not doing heavy choreography during that performance. It was mostly doing s-xual poses on a chair. Why didn't she sing every second of that live? Most people sing live at the Grammys. Beyoncé's use of background singers in concerts has the same purpose as backing tracks for Gaga's. They fill in the vocals and sometimes even carry the melody part or do the harder parts of the chorus while Beyonce dances or does her s-x poses and adds a line here and there throughout the chorus. She isn't singing the harder part of the chorus, that she sang on the album...the background singers are doing it for her. I've also seen JT in concert and as much as I love him, those background singers pick up a lot of the slack and fill in the majority of the vocals heard in a lot of the choruses. Some music lends itself to background vocals better and some lends itself better to backing tracks. An old school rock band with several members and background singers obviously isn't going to use backing tracks.(most rock bands won't even use background singers at all, but The Rolling Stones have relied on them to fill in their vocals for years.) Pink's music is more Pop Rock, less Dance music, like the kind of Dance music ARTPOP was. I'm a huge fan of Pink, but the majority of her music is different than the majority of songs on Gaga's last album. Using background singers is definitely no better than backing tracks, if you let them do the heavy lifting...and that's what a lot of artists do...including the large majority of the ones you listed. (don't want to go down the list and name off person by person, because stan wars are ignorant and useless!) The difference is that in the videos from TMB we can hear her singing the choruses clearly. This "the quality is bad, you need to be there" argument is completely invalid. We know there's a heavy use of backing track and we knows she can do without it. I know she doesn't lipsync though, Im not ignorant :) The difference is you are picking and choosing what videos to show or point out and ignoring the other videos where people are showing you that she used backing tracks to fill in vocals during earlier tours. I remember fans b---hing about this during TMB.
djBuffoon 12,123
Back tracks are standard procedures for pop tours that go on for 50+ shows. Pop songs are layered. Pop songs have heavy choreography. Like someone else already mentioned, even Beyonce relies on back track, but I never see anywhere here ever question her talent or ability. Y'all want her to exhaust her voice by singing every damn line? You really have to change the direction of your voice with some of those choruses. She was able to do them at the Roseland shows cause was only a few days, but trying to do that every day would be stupid. And you seem to forget that Gaga herself has said she "sings smart" to conserve her voice for the long haul tours. The back track is not going anywhere, you ignorant n00bs. One of the only people with any rationality on this ****ing board.
PinkBalloons 0
Don't wanna be rude, but it's partly her own fault. If she would get back up singers instead of that loud backing track people might be less confused. Kinda :D
Brooke Hoegan 1,018
I read it twice... where does he say she lipsynced ? and if she really said "For those who didn't come for ARTPOP or didn't like the album, grab a drink or a glow stick or get the f... out"

(don't want to go down the list and name off person by person, because stan wars are ignorant and useless!)I never said Beyonce sang more actually. I don't think she does. I said she danced more and harder, and I understood then why not singing during choruses. I'm sorry if I wasn't more clear. I understand background singers can help fill in the sound of the song and maybe fill out the vocal, but the difference is then I at least hear Gaga's distinct vocal, not her voice buried in her own studio vocal. Background singers are there for a reason, to fill out and give the song a fuller sound in places or sing alone where it's called for. And I'm fine with canned backing vocals (used to some degree in every pop show) and don't need a pop singer a hundred percent live without layering, but just not as much as on ARTPOP this time with her live vocals in the forefront the least amount that she's ever been when singing to canned vocals. I've never had this complaint about Gaga before. So it's not something I don't get about pop shows.I still stand on, Gaga used to rely on it less, and Gaga is a step above most pop singers and so a disappointment that she relied on it this much this tour when clearly not needed as part of the song. It didn't take away my enjoyment of the show. It was a great show, but I'm not blind to the fact that she was lazy about live vocals and singing at times. I go to a ton of concerts, all different genres. I understand what is used in different types. Watching her walk around and yell out and yell in a few lyrics while her studio vocal sang was unnecessary and then starts back in singing again and no difference in vocal level than when she stopped. I am fine with backing tracks, but have them buried lower in the mix when singing along, and also have background singers on some songs also. It just makes for a more live experience to a concert.Gaga I hold to a high level and she has held herself to such a high level about her being such a great singer, which she is, because she has a powerful voice. She keeps emphasizing how she sings live. I think pop singers hide behind that line too much, when getting lazy about relying on backing tracks where not even necessary, not doing heavy choreography. If you are a great singer, your live vocals should be in the forefront always except for then.I can be disappointed in that fact regarding the concert. Others could care less. Again, I still loved the show and it didn't hamper that, and that says a lot considering I'm not a fan of ARTPOP except a handful of songs. I almost didn't go because of that, that she was singing the whole album almost, but glad I did go. The show had terrific energy and many ARTPOP songs were better on stage and me dancing along to than for me when listened to on the album. The opening of one of my favorite songs of hers, ARTPOP, will always be a highlight for me.
Pop Angel 0
Why does she need to give the extra attention to some haters journalists? Lets just ignore them, this will give the article extra boost. Gaga, nobody has ever build the sculpture for critics.
