PopBitch 1,218
In terms of PR, you have to over exaggerate how much you love something and you have to be 100% positive at all times--that's why you see celebs smiling all the time. I think I heard a celeb say that she puts vaseline on her teeth b/c they get dried out from smiling openly for hours on end. There can be NO negativity towards fans b/c fans are very sensitive to any such criticism, and they can always go on to the next celeb since fame and fans are fickle. So by saying that you're not as obsessed about your fans as your peers, your fans can and will jump ship. It's just the name of the game, and it's dumb, but that how it's played. Notice how Gaga's tweet says how her fans are her life--that's the way to do business. You have to hustle. Katy's not smart in seeing that.I think that's bull. She doesn't say her fans don't mean something to her and that she isn't grateful for their support. She shows that to her fans. She says she's not as obsessed with her fans than others. Do you think David Bowie was obsessed with his fans? Nope. Do you think the Beatles were obsessed with their fans? Nope. Do you think Coldplay or Muse is obsessed with their fans? Nope. Justin Timberlake? Nope. Arcade Fire? Nope. Great music and great entertainment and showing respect to your fans will keep you going but most of all being a great entertainer who goes out on that stage touring and give you their all and has nothing left at the end of the performance, that's what keeps a performer on top past their adoring teen fanbase period where teen fans live and breathe the every move of their pop idol. College and young adults live for the music and traveling to multiple shows and hopefully meeting them but not living and breathing everything they say. Now if you treat your fans like ****, that's different, but I don't think Katy ever once inferred that her fans mean nothing to her.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that it's not healthy to be obsessed with your fans, but just do NOT verbalize the sentiment. It's better if Katy had said that she loves her fans and leave it at that and good god, keep those thoughts to yourself! It can be misconstrued easily. Even if you're not obsessed about your fans, it's a PR no no to even say this! For instance, I don't like my work AT ALL, but I come to work smiling and I would never verbalize that I'm even slightly dissatisfied at work, even though almost everyone in the world does not like some aspects of their work. Being a pop star is also work, so you need to be ultra-politically correct, even if It's the truth, it's better to keep it to yourself, if that makes sense. I agree about the whole PR bit and loving everything, like pushing their next album as their favorite, etc, and saying you love your fans is always done and part of the game. I just don't think you have to act like your fans are your life and can't live without them and if you say something different they will leave you. I agree that Katy could have said it all differently.
LoveandMagic 1,731
Personally I don't think you can ever be too grateful. Where would you be without your fans support? Definitely not where you are today.... This. So many artists completely forget that when they get to the top. I think it says a lot of good things about Gaga that she is constantly showing her appreciation toward her fans. And it's super savvy in terms of marketing. Fans don't just buy the music, they can promote like crazy too. Having a close connection with them is smart, I think. I found the "desperate" and "second coming" comments pretty shady though. I don't have a problem with Katy just wanting to be a bubblegum pop star or "another entertainer", it's a profitable, fun and glamorous field. I can't blame her for that, especially since she's had such great success. I would, however, have a problem with her implying that others that want to have a deeper meaning with their music and a close connection with their fans are signs of desperation or that they themselves are full of pretension. Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

rocketno9 0
The whole Gaga/Katy constant comparison and petty statements is really getting old. Katy's generic and is really just for the GP while Gaga desires a more intimate relationship with her audience. Nothing wrong with either side, but Katy and other similar artists really should show more appreciation to the people who put them where they are. Shadow 6,632
That's why Katy will only be just an entertainer with that attitude, though a good one. Gaga is an icon for equality, kindness, and fashion. She's brave enough to dare to be more than the typical entertainer. She's willing to take risks that I will always respect Gaga for and when she says she cares about her fans, I know she is for real. Earnestness is evidenced through actions. I could see Gaga lead international movements for change. Could Katy aspire for more and channel her star power to encourage positive change? You don't need to be the Second Coming to show compassion and lead for change. Do your own research.
