Why ARTPOP isn't as successful as it should've been?

A #1 song does not mean it would be a trash song. All Gaga's #1 hits are one of her best except BTW. And we all know that when Gaga gets a #1 hit the song is amazing and has big impact. Is Just Dance trash? Poker Face? NO! Get over yourself

Get over myself? It's my opinion and I'm saying it how it is with the majority of chart music, you don't have to look far to see a lot of people agree that the diversity and freshness of 1's has shifted, hence the hits you listed being so impactful in the past state of the charts because new sounds were positively received back then.

Promotion. Promotion. Promotion.

And sloppy lyrics.

And attempting to make music for her fans rather than just making music that she wants.

Everything you've described is exactly how she was during The Fame Monster-era and we all know how popular and successful it was. So its not a matter of art being brought into the equation, its not a matter of her ego, and its not even a matter of how "relatable" she is to the public because by your (and most peoples logic) shes never been particularly "relatable".

What the problem is imo is how she puts it all together. She had all the right ingredients and interesting intentions that somehow resulted in something unpolished. Thats the best way I could describe this era, its her most unpolished but not in a way thats complimentary. Its not nearly raw enough to be described unpolished as a compliment. I think she needs a shift in how her work comes together. She needs a better editing eye, maybe a broader scope in sound. I think shes so concerned with being contrary that sometimes she lets quality slip by without even realizing it.

Its not about her needing to make "radio ready" music either because, despite what ive seen some fools say, this album does have radio ready hits. The reason they're not succeeding is because of the aforementioned statement I made and also simply because she is Lady Gaga. The public have made up their mind about her and therefore regardless of how catchy something she makes is they sort of roll their eyes and immediately come up with some statement of indifference or opposition because they assume because its her its not respectable. Shes lost the respect of the media and a lot of the critics are the media now and a lot of critics are just fan bloggers. She was hit with a backlash last era thats dripped over to this era. ARTPOP isn't her best album, but its certainly not bad either. Its just fine. But that brings me to the last fault I found in this era, the album was fine. Nothing more or less and was not a drastic enough aesthetic change to alter peoples negative perception of her and keep their heads turning back in her direction. Theres no reason a song like Do What U Want or G.U.Y. shouldn't be at the top of the charts considering all the mediocrity up there (Roar, Timber, Counting Stars). Its just because shes Lady Gaga.

Honestly:  :applause:  :applause:  :applause:

These threads are useless tbh, why keep on quacking and quacking of the same thing that has been gone through a thousand times. It is what it is.

So, she prolly needs to stop being so Gaga and start being more organic in everyway. That would prolly give her that shock value back with the GP. People will be like 'is that Lady Gaga?' when they see her dressed up tidy and playing organic music with easy-going choreos... and they'll get their eyes rolling on her back again!

aka. Madonna during her Ray Of Light era, people paid attention back to her because she was being organic, she was now a mother and was not half-naked doing extravaganza moves!

I think she needs to commit to something. This era started off with her and her team saying she was going to pare down the excess and focus more on extravagant makeup or fabrics as opposed to entire ensembles and its like she just rebelled against that idea and went back to major excess, maybe thats part of the reason Troy Carter left her. Shes pared down some since the Born This Way era but she really didn't drastically alter her look or anything this era and I feel like people need to see her differently whether that be her look or her music.

Personally what I wanted for this era was more this, it was so contemporary and so clean but still very Gaga:

I think the imagery/aesthetic the era started off with was perfect and she just didn't carry on with it whatsoever. She said shes every icon, she wanted to show off all these different looks and not just be one thing or one look but I mean ultimately to me it came off unfocused.

The album I wanted from her (or the album I want from her I should say) is one that has shimmering electropop minimalism and some of her early sounding piano balladry. Stefani meets Robyn/Depeche Mode/Little Boots/Jessie Ware. Thats what I want.

My own personal opinion is that i do enjoy alot of the music on the album but how she speaks of the album and how little we have actually seen of her this era is boring. I know that there are behind the scenes things that happened and all kinds of flubs with releases and thats where ARTPOP failed. Applause did decent and showed longevity and appeal and dwuw had the same potential. People loved the song but gaga was unable to follow through with its video release and promotion. She wanted to have a fresh start after dwuw and truly start the ARTPOP era the way she wanted but we still have little promo, sloppy release time frame and fans and nonfans alike are just not interested in her like they were before. I love her music but her career is all over the place.

Troy didn't leave her. Gaga fired him. It was a complete shock and surprise to him- he said so in an interview.

I kind of agree, I wouldn't use the word sloppy though. I just think this era comes off unpolished. That sounds a little less like stan-hate to me lol

And people have indifferent interest in whats going on because not much has been going on. It felt like at the start of the era she was self-conscious or something, she kept talking about how the backlash affected her and part of the albums content is about the backlash. I generally like the album, I just don't feel like she gave herself a very interesting or cool concept to work with. And im glad there is a potential second part that could possibly be a step above the first, but at the same time its like if you're going to give us new music....why not just give us a whole new album? Why a continuation of something that is just so vague and open ended to the point that its not really a theme at all?

Whether she likes it or not, if she wants to continue with big budget videos and tours, she is going to have to adjust to what the GP likes. Besides TF and TFM eras were her best ones. She was hungry for success. She lost that flame.

Can this fan base stop with this delusion? You don't need #1 hits to make high end respectable grand work. In fact I see so mug more quality work from artists that aren't really in the mainstream. Honestly gaga should never give up her creative and artistic drive because we need that in pop culture. We need it. I don't care if it turns people off I don't care if it doesn't sell we need it. It's important and it has it's place.

True dat. I loved the maturity that the ARTPOP images showcased, very minimalist and lots of whites, neutrals, this theme of technology becoming one with nature, etc. I mean I get so frustrated because I feel like ARTPOP had all the tools to be a smash, at least aesthetically with the work. All those inventions had potential and could've represented something but where are they now....

Yeah I find it kind of silly how some people continue to harp on about her needing to make "generic" or "radio friendly" music because she does make radio friendly music. I mean Do What U Want, G.U.Y., Sex Dreams, Gypsy, Donatella, Fashion, MANiCURE, Applause, Aura....its all radio friendly. Even if I don't like a song or two that I listed I still think they could've been sent to radio. I could imagine when making it she probably thought Jewels n Drugs was radio friendly as well (although I think its so useless).

The only songs off this record that to me did not have any radio potential were Swine, ARTPOP and Venus.

With Born This Way fine, there were a handful of songs that I didn't think were suitable for radio (and not because they were too "artistic"). But ARTPOP? I mean, this album is totally radio suited. I feel like a lot of people just grab a Gaga-criticism from the shelf without any rhyme or reason.
