George Will leaves GOP: 'This is not my party'

Longtime conservative columnist George Will says he has left the Republican Party because of Donald Trump.

“This is not my party,” he said during a Friday speech to the Federalist Society, according to the conservative-leaning outlet PJ Media.

Will said he has switched his Maryland voter registration to "unaffiliated."

When asked in an interview later what message he had for GOP voters, Will suggested they resign themselves to not winning the presidency in November.

“Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House,” he said.

Will has been an outspoken critic of Trump, writing in a column in April that the presumptive GOP presidenetial nominee is imperiling Republican chances of maintaining its majority in the Senate.

“At least half a dozen Republican senators seeking reelection and Senate aspirants can hope to win if the person at the top of the Republican ticket loses their state by, say, only four points, but not if he loses by 10,” Will wrote.

I liked a comment I saw on YouTube where someone was theorizing that, thanks to Trump and the ridiculous ways of most Republican politicians (people like Bachmann, Palin, Cruz, Romney, Santorum, etc), that the GOP will split into the Tea Party and a group of self respecting Republicans that'll eventually join the Libertarians, adopting a more liberal social view but keeping their conservative economic views. Then Democrats and Libertarians will be the main parties and the Tea Party will die out with their members

What the hell is he talking about? The right, especially the religious right, has been spewing Homophobic, Xenophobic, Racist, Misogynistic dribble for DECADES. The only difference between Trump and Conservative politicians and public figures is that he's frank. Were all of these things okay before?

This IS his party. Trump is only popular because people support him. Hes only popular because his political beliefs and views are what people want. Trump is the candidate that the people asked for. He only exists because we've allowed him to do so. Generations of propagandized fools who honestly DO believe that Immigrants are taking their jobs, abortion is all about killing babies, black people are lazy, the gays have an agenda, and Trans people are molesting the women and children exist BECAUSE of rhetoric specifically aimed and lobbied against these people. 

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for people eventually realizing the error of their ways, but it rings a bit dry that its taken so long. It makes me question how genuine it really is and if its not just an attempt at saving face.

They could've left the GOP when the GOP decided to impede women's right to adequate reproductive healthcare to appease religious zealotry, not to mention healthcare benefits for all. They could've left the GOP when they had to resort to demonizing brown people and immigrants and then later actively contributing to voter suppression because they knew that their racist, xenophobic rhetoric would start to cost them major elections in the future. They could've left the GOP when they decided to try to halt equal rights laws being passed for minorities; People of Color, Women, the LGBTQ+ community, etc. But they are choosing to leave the GOP because one man ran for president and started saying stuff and representing the Republican party in a way that most people already knew was the true face of the party  Call me out on it if you wish, but I think Conservatives who claimed to fully support the Republican party before Trump while not acknowledging these things, this growing undercurrent of bigotry and intolerence must've been living in some mixture of privilege and denial

Yes! This is exactly what I believe about the Republican Party, don't get me wrong, I completely am against Trump and I just hate his overall "politics", but he is the Republican Party. If anything, he might even be a bit more liberal than the Republicans themselves, I mean, he's supposedly supports the LGBTQ+ community, something that almost no other Republican does. 

It's stupid to say "Oh, Donald Trump doesn't really represent the Republicans, he's just crazy". Yes, he's crazy, but he's winning the polls in their party! What do you mean he doesn't represent the Republicans well? He does represent the misogynistic, homophobic, racist, xenophobic people of our country, which the vast majority of are Republicans. 

I also agree that the reason why people are leaving now is because of the fact that Trump is so matter-of-fact and frank about what he says. The Republicans are essentially saying the same things, just being more "PC" about it.

I just like, find it so hilarious in a really tragic way tbh. Donald Trump is more socially moderate than even many core Republicans are, his past as a democrat really only confirms that how much he believes in what far right social policy he believes in is at least partially influenced by his party's platform and not his own long held beliefs. I'm not trying to give him any credit, but this has always been fishy to me . 

The cruel irony in that "PC" statement though  In reality, conservatives and reactionaries and anti-feminists, anti-sjws, w.e you want to call this amalgamation of people with sometimes intersecting worldviews  --- they are "PC" themselves, and they get "offended" at things all of the time, I don't personally believe people tend to be "oversensitive" on important issues like identity politics, but if anything I'll concede that both parties are equally "oversensitive".
