Don't bring money into the picture. Album/single sales aren't where money comes from. Just about everyone knows that.

There are some who let the charts dictate their opinions on music, which I think is foolish, but this anti-chart brigade didn't really happen until Gaga started to underperform.

It's your free time so obsess over what you want... whether it's the music or the bling or both.

because people take it way too seriously as if it was their bank account getting those coins

I agree with you that Gaga needed the chart success to get to where she is, and she does need to maintain a certain level of chart success to retain that spot. However, I don't personally like the obsession that surround the charts. I get that some people find studying the charts interesting and that's fine, although I personally find it very boring, but there does come a point where I wonder whether or not people care more about the charts than they actually do about the quality of the music. I've seen people change their opinions on songs and whole albums because of where it sits in the charts and that's wrong imo. Where an album peaks on a chart shouldn't dictate your opinion on it. I want Gaga to do well and be successful because I believe she truly deserves it but sales are no longer a focal point for me. Listening to Gaga's music and enjoying the experience means a lot more to me than charts and sales do.

It's natural to want your fave (be it GaGa, Katy, Rihanna, etc) to be as successful as you can be

But after you buy the singles, albums and stream the songs and vids as much as you can, you really have no other control over how well they do. So why waste time and energy stressing about something you have little to no control of?

It's natural for artists to have Ups and Downs in their career! But,if your opinion and/or like for the artist declines just because of underperformances, I think you have to start wondering if you really were a fan to begin with...

I think it is only problem when they began to value Gaga and her music just for her chart position.

That is what's annoying for most people, I believe.

What happened in GGD, particularly.

That they cannot take her music beyond the numbers.

She didn't get #1, she is a flop, irrelevant, etc.

And they would feel underwhelmed that Gaga doesn't chart high.

And there comes many threads about it.

Wishing past producers would just handle her albums.

I guess in the long run it doesn't help people to enjoy music any more.

But the thing is she does have money, she does have dedicated fans, she is selling out arenas worldwide. This era has shown that she does not need a #1 hit to stick around.

The reason that there is criticism is that most people who are obsessed with the charts love to shove it in everyone's faces. Sorry I don't really give a **** what is charting now? ARTPOP went #1 in my country so why should I really give a ****? She's just about sold out the arena nearest me which is in July and she is still played constantly on the radio. The real issue at hand is that some people believe that the charts dictate EVERYTHING when it's been shown though this entire era that the charts don't mean nearly as much as some think.

Gaga was the biggest pop star in the world only 3 years ago, so of course she can still sell out arenas. Let's see how many more years that lasts without another hit

Why would she not get another hit? Is she quitting music after this album or something?

Gaga has already had two Pop hits this era. That's all an artist needs, with an arsenal of hit songs like Gaga already has, to keep adding to the pile. As long as she can keep that up, she will continue to stay relevant and continue to be a touring force.

She didn't have a hit because it didn't go #1?  That is a joke.  MANY people knew about Applause and did like it and a very good amount of people (including a very large amount of non-fans) knew about Do What U Want and did like it.  I heard it all the time at college campuses at parties.  This delusion that she didn't have a hit cause the songs didn't chart high needs to stop.

We all people really love Gaga. Its a cycle - Katy will fall out of it and so be it. Gaga will continue. She's earned several titles at this point. She's known as a live performer and will be doing so the rest of her life. Chart success or not, she's here to stay.

because stan culture has been brainwashed into thinking that having a bunch of number ones will tangibly lead to money in the artist's hands. but thats not how it works, no artist sees immediate results from a chart position, look at rihanna, im sure she doesnt have as much of a net worth or touring pull as gaga, yet she has like twice the hit singles.

and by the ****in way, gaga's music became successful off of its catchiness and its own merits, not because it went number 1, which a lot of her singles even didnt. bad romance was #2, edge of glory was #6, her songs didnt help her career through what number it was, it was because they resonated with pop culture. some even lower chart positioned singles still managed to widen her popularity. its the focus on THE number, THE position, that ONE moment, that's where the criticism is drawn, because its dehumanizing the experience and its training an entire generation of music listeners into devaluing a piece of work simply based on its chart number.
