I don't think so, they bombarded the album with negativity even before its release. The biased reviews, the Katy vs Gaga comparisons, The claims that Gaga is desperately trying to promote her album etc. Lets be honest. The media had decided the fate of ARTPOP before its release.

By the start of 2013, various media outlets from Billboard to RS to MTV have been hyping ARTPOP as among the year's most anticipated. And then the abrupt tour cancellation happened, followed by the chart performance of Applause, which was subpar compared to her previous lead singles. The "fate" of ARTPOP wasn't decided by the media or the internet, it was by the events that occurred before, during, and after its release.

As for the reviews, PRISM wasn't universally received either. Same with other releases. If I remember it correctly, the reviews given by the top media publications to ARTPOP such as BB weren't that adverse. And to be fair, tabloids have rarely given something positive to anyone anyway. Media as a whole, specifically the reputable ones, just report on the things they see, and ideally should do so only with factual basis. The comparisons between KP/LG aren't something new as well. They're being pitted against each other since mid-2010, fuelled by KP's so-called comments aimed towards the Alejandro video at a time when she's starting her TD era. They only highlighted it more because the two happened to release a new single at almost the same time. Media didn't ask for it, the people behind the releases indirectly or directly did.

20,000 is pretty solid.

1,760,000 copies sold in 5 months.

Remember when Gaga tweeted in October 2011 how BTW sold 5 million copies, 1 million each month :toofunny:

And 70% of those sales probably came within the first four weeks of its release (BTW sold 1.4 million in the US during that time frame). By the third month (or the 2nd), it's arguably struggling already worldwide. In comparison, ARTPOP is doing good despite releasing one top 10 hit so far.

BTW sold 120k in the first or second week of January 2012 tho..  and it was already at 6M WW, so I think you are wrong here..

And also the Katy Gaga comparisons were at its peak during APplause Roar ..  And other times when they were compared, Gaga was always on top.  Now Katy övershadowed her.. that's probably the reason why these comparisons got so much more attention now than before..

I agree with everything else tho :)

It did? I didn't know that. At first glance, one wouldn't expect that BTW would be able to pull those kind of numbers despite MTN being a single at that time (or a month before). The anticipation of the tour was greater than I thought - for BTW to pull more than 100K. That's impressive. Gives me more hope for ARTPOP once the world tour kicks off.

BTW was far from struggling at any point though. It was selling 106k WW/week by the end of its 3rd month, 85k by the end of its 4th month and 55k by the end of its 5th month.

That's highly impressive in comparison to "smash" albums like BEYONCE or PRISM (which are already down to 30k weekly sales), especially that it was during the You & I, a local single, and Marry The Night, an underperformance.

Some might say it was frontloaded, but it wasn't. Its longevity was greater than average, but everyone was blinded by its first week sales.

The negativity during BTW was unbelievable. That album slayed. Period. And people still question if the media had a play in souring people's opinions of gaga. The flop talk started during BTW when as you said even months after release it was selling well.

They were hyping everyhing that doesn't matter, media always hyp enew releases by famous artists.. They were trashing everything Gaga did from the beginning of the era, have you seen any positive headlines, cause I didn't. Also the performance of Applause was nothing to trash about, of course they started the Katy comparisons. :awkney:. Everyone had it first page when Examiner gave Gaga an awfuk eview, they didn't even bother to mention that Examiner articles are written by anyone and especially haters.

Yes I also didn't know, and I think Luc posted a receipts from Mediabase and I was like :udidnt:   And people say it was frontloaded ...  Well maybe in the USA, but WW sales were extraordinary throghout the whole cycle of the album..  If only Hair was released as 6th single .. We might have had even 8 million selling album with BTW.   But I don't think we'll see the same effect with ARTPOP, In Fact during BTWB  the album didn't sell a lot (but it was obviously because of lack of single .. I mean MTN died 5 months before the tour even started...)

In the first week of 2012 Born This Way sold 20k in the US while in the second week only 13k. It's unlikely it sold 100k+ worldwide
