Sorry, but if Gypsy is called generic, Applause is in the same category. I like both of them, but you cant be so blind or deaf to call Gypsy generic ( which for my, it isnt) and say that Applause is something special.

I don't want start the wars again but imo:

Gypsy is generic for Gaga because it is predictable. Gaga's songs tend to have very unusual and unique themes, you can never guess the lyrics of the song before you listen to it. When I listened Gypsy the first time it was like I've heard the song again. The lyrics are very beautiful but they are predictable, they are not Gaga and they are exactly the lyrics you expect from a song called Gypsy and Shakira has done exaclty the same theme before so I expected something more innovative. Add to that, that the production is nothing special either and this is why Gypsy is imo the most basic song on the album. Applause has a unique theme, unique verses and instrumental that has captivate the emotion of the word action applause which is very unique for songs and especially pop songs. The chorus is the only generic thing on the song but because of the rest of the song the chorus becomes unique as well + its extremely catchy.

I don't mean that you can't predict the theme but the lyrics (my mistake). Sexxx Dreams lyrics are very unique. Gypsy lyrics are very predictable, its like they already excisted. The only different think of the song is the structure. All these are my opinion only of course but I think that I have given strong explanations.

Why?

The construction of Applause definitely isn't breathtaking but isn't anything generic either. As I said the innovative about Gypsy is exactly what you said above, the thing is that the song itself is very usual, I have heard these same words before, If you know what I mean. I just expected much more from this song, the way it is now,anyone could sing it and it would be his/her own. Gaga's songs aren't like that, at least after TF. Gaga's songs are only for her, even if someone else sings them you can still say that they are Lady Gaga songs. Gypsy isn't like Gaga wrote it at all in the most part. Maybe the fact that RedOne wrote it as well plays a part to it.
