On Swine and rape (TRIGGER WARNING)

She is a performance artist who used pop music and celebrity as her mediums of expression in the past, but now she's really blatantly going outside the expectations and boundaries of pop music.

As for the meaning of the performance, maybe her intentions were different than the OP's interpretation but if so that's fine. Art is not limited to just extrapolating the artist's exact intentions. Meaning is created by the act of interpretation.

I have also been a victim of rape. But I'm not on stage throwing it out there and making people uncomfortable. Everybody is entitled to their own views/ opinions. This is, after all, a difficult subject to touch upon.

I just didn't like how she threw it in everyone's faces.

Agreed 100%. It's an incredibly difficult subject that's hard to express, that being said it has an absence from being spoken about on a larger level that needs to be addressed not only in part for prevention but also so those who are victims can be given the ability to recuperate from the trauma and psychological implications it places. Unfortunately we live in a time that many times the victim is given blame and this needs addressed, we can't really hide it. I think she made it so purposefully 'shocking' and memorable for this purpose. She knows what she's doing, she very well could be trying to ignite the conversation and using her experiences to aid people who may be victims as well.

I'm also a victim of s-xual violence and cried and shook my way through tonight's performance.  I was having trouble finding the words to describe this performance and how I related to and understood and you've said it all perfectly.

With issues like these, sometimes survival means walking the thin line between self-empowerment and self-destruction.  That is what it feels like to have to face your demons.  Tonight's performance was the perfect depiction of that.

I think Gaga hugging Millie at the end as they're both covered in vomit was such a beautiful conclusion.  If the first green vomit was the outside aggression - the vomit projected onto you by someone else, in this case, your abuser - then the black vomit is what you put on yourself and what you may even invite.  Instead of outside aggression, it's inner turmoil.  All that self-hatred that comes after.  So to see her hug Millie was so huge to me - that you can still learn to love yourself even when you feel so dirty.

I've suspected that Gaga was a survivor of s-xual violence because I've always seen so much of myself in her and her work.  I've had a difficult time listening to Swine because it resonated with me in a very scary way.  It was heart-breaking (and strangely empowering) to hear her finally vocalize what she went through and then tear up the stage showing us.

I'm on my sixth year of living with RR-PTSD and I've never felt healthier.  Tonight's performance was a powerful depiction of what I've faced and a reminder of how far I've come.  I still have days where I feel like I'm clinging to a raging bull covered in black slime - but I've finally gotten to the point where I too can hug Millie once things have slowed down.

Much love to you and anyone else who saw themselves on stage tonight

Unfortunately it looks as though media outlets are focusing on the performance art itself in terms of being shocking rather than the message behind it already. Sloppy journalism and reporting in my opinion, but then again it's not surprising given media's lack of research these days. It's sad that her intention may very well be lost, and her message completely looked over.

In some ways that's a shame, but at the same time we can see this as part of the message. We can see how badly the media frames and distorts her work, and use that to open our eyes to a) the trustworthiness of the media in general, and b) the true value of art that is only visible to people who are willing to engage with it.

I honestly think aside from the individual messages she creates and the commentaries she produces her greatest art is in placing a reflective mirror back at the machine and making a commentary on the inner workings of fame to a certain extent. I agree fully with you that this shows the true power or media and their use of framing as a tool to produce a message they want to get across, in many cases this isn't in fact that actual message at all but rather a distorted variation that can be further blurred due to bias. As for B I think that's simply a problem of people who have a limited interest in art and that things aren't purely to be understood at surface level. It's truly a shame that people allow themselves to form an opinion without knowing that message of artist or the intended goal, they would rather make a hasty judgement clouded by their ignorance and choice in engaging in that way.

Elizabeth

Thanks for posting this. I think it gives a real insight into why she decided to do her performance of Swine like she did.

I don´t understand how people can forgett what that song is about..... I thought her swine perfomance was awesome!

Plus we should not forget that she suffert from bulimia for a long time. So I think that perfomance has a lot of diffrent layers.

Perfectly put OP. And thank you for sharing.  The vomiting did not phase me like it has some, (bit confused there) but the reasoning for it all makes much sense.
