TimisaMonster 31,073
I've been thinking about this ever since the 'what albums were ahead of its time' thread. It's influences are definitely retro (classic rock and retro dance), and many of its themes and subject matter are incredibly bold and progressive and incredibly... American. But, as somebody said above, I feel like its encapsulated in its own little world. Music has been done like it, speaking broadly. However, nothing has really been like it, if that makes sense. It's such an odd album that I personally would see it as an obscure entity in itself, rather than solely comparable to other places in time. HML isn't even that good tho But man wow imagine artrock ARTROCK... GET READY FOR ARTROCK... 2014!!! :nooo: Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify! It really is a very unique album. I've been thinking about this ever since the 'what albums were ahead of its time' thread. Stefani328 321
Not really. It has too many 80's/90's influences to be ahead of it's time

HeavyMetalLuvah 0
o<(+_+)>o I think Gaga has many songs that are ahead of their time in all of her albums. But the entire Born This Way album was overall ahead of its time. And here's why: -I think Born This way was the first album to mix the past with the present and even the future in such a seamless way. Born This Way was the first album were you could clearly see major influences from decades such as the 80s and 90s but still sound modern and futuristic. Before this album, most of the music could be pinpointed to one specific era (60s,70s,80s,90s,2000s, ect.). Or you could even label most of the music as either modern or retro. However BTW its kind of its own thing despide it having many genres and or musical influences from the past. Now, its pretty common to hear songs with modern genres mixed with influences from the 70s, 80s, 90s ect. But before BTW, there just wasn't much of that. tristessa 0
That's the thing that's interesting about Gaga's music I think, it always has a very retro feel / influences but manages to appear futuristic at the same time. I think that was especially evident with TF. Obviously she infuses this with modern influences which also gives it its unique sound. I don't know if BTW was necessarily ahead if its time because it drew so heavily from the past, but it certainly was its own distinct body of work as others said which makes it stand out on its own whether or not it will be influential in later time periods.. I suppose. I remember her also saying something about, like, if she were to open a time capsule from today she would like to see something from the past that was carried on in her music, so I guess it has that quality too, when we look back.
