Retep 0
What is it about Taylor Swift that makes her this massive album seller? I mean she is isnt a good vocalist, she can't dance, her music is very basic and generic with no depth or meaning so what makes her so special? I ask this as a FAN so don't come at me with petty responses. I am genuinely curious what is the secret to her success that other girls who are more talented than her can't manage to grasp on. A. Her music is able to be enjoyed by both genders with limited criticism (likely due to her country background, in my area guys were more obsessed with TayTay than girls were) B. She's safe for parents to allow their kids to listen to, she has a super clean and friendly image and is seen as the all american girl C. Specific songs that are somehow vague enough where the listener wants to connect to it D. Catchy pop beats and deals in every field (tech, food, retail stores) E. Country music at the time is a pretty faithful audience, that crowd buys the music in comparison to a lot of other genres audiences who pirate on the whim And it goes on, she just is the perfectly molded artist for anyone to listen to yet this makes her detestable to others. I believe her success is due to her appeal to the masses. Lets remember her background is country music, an extemely popular genre in the US. She appeals to country fans and pop fans, alike, and all sorts of age groups. She's very relatable, too. She's the all-American girl next door. Also, her image is almost immaculate. She's just an extremely likeable pop singer.
Mills 446
Carly Rae was ever a serious breakthrough act. She had a popular novelty song with a music video that went viral. Just like gangam style, no one expected her to have any more hits. Lorde had another top 10 hit after royal, her album is selling great, her promo tour is doing just fine, she won two Grammys and she got the honorable job of curating the hunger games soundtrack so I don't really see how that is not promising. There's more to careers than scoring #1 singles. Didn't I mention that she has great album sales, which is a statement that she's successful? The trend I was referring to is the fact that since 2012, new female artists are scoring huge #1 hits with 9-week reigns without quickly scoring another #1 follow-up. This scenario is a notable contrast to what had happened in the late 2000s all the way to 2010 wherein the likes of Rihanna, Gaga, and Katy Perry have scored multiple #1s in a relatively shorter period of time, and that greatly helped them to establish themselves as the leading pop stars of the late 2000s-early 2010s. It's a bit worrying that (new) female artists of today are struggling to score multiple #1s as quickly as the ones before them despite the popularity they've achieved. We're getting smash records since 2012, but we're barely getting new music superstars (w/ notable media attention outside of their music endeavours, tour receipts, album sales, single sales, social media presence, et.al) comparable to the breakout stars of the late 2000s-early 2010s led by Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor, Katy, Bieber, and Bruno Mars. The only true star who came after this generation was Adele, and she came into the top spotlight in 2011. Lorde's successful, but she's nowhere near to the success of the artists I've mentioned. Same goes to the other breakthrough acts since 2012.
Mills 446
She'll debut close to 1M at the very least. If not, then no one else would, even Adele. The promo partnerships they've pulled for this album should move more than a million units in the first week. It just has to. Debuting more than 1M three times in a row, that's a feat her label couldn't afford to lose. They're gunning for TS to be named as the Billboard's Artist of the Decade come the end of the 2010s. Who knew back then? She has the most successful career among all acts at the moment.
EXCXSXE 0
Sometimes I think she only sells well because her music appeals to younger people who actually buy music.
Redstreak 6,653
Well, I guess selling out does pay. Red sold 6 Million WW. I doubt she's going full pop because of sales. If anything that would hurt her "pay" Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

She's actually a really great lyricist, the simplicity of her songs doesn't take away from the lyrics and emotional depth, in many ways it enhances it. Mills 446
Red sold 6 Million WW. I doubt she's going full pop because of sales. If anything that would hurt her "pay" Exactly. This makes me more interested then on whether 1989 would be able to continue her streak of 4M+ US album sales once everything's set and done. All of her 4 major studio albums have sold at least 4M, selling more than 20M overall from those 4 albums alone, excluding her other minor releases. Another 4M will just further push her and even surpass Whitney Houston as the 8th best-selling female album artist since 1991. She's basically the biggest-selling female artist since Britney Spears. Wow.
