Once again, we are telling women that they can be s-xual, but not too s-xual. Women in bikinis or thongs are in countless rap videos from men. As are misogynistic lyrics that objectify women. People recognize that and often aren't too happy about it, but no one really gives a ****. No one singles out the male rapper and talks about the message he's sending to children.

But when a female takes charge and displays her s-xuality, oh ****. She's suddenly a terrible role model and not worthy of respect. She's an awful influence on kids and she's the reason that girls are becoming s-xually aware at a younger age and she's the reason that men have less respect for women. The second the woman owns her own s-xuality, she becomes subhuman.

Furthermore, what you're saying is that when women become s-xual, they suddenly are no longer individual humans, but rather a representation of all womanhood. A woman can't shake her ass without boys being corrupted and women losing more respect. When a single, individual woman shakes her ass, all women are seen as sluttier and less respectable. Setting aside the respect aspect (which I will address later), you don't see that as more problematic than anything you argue? Apparently not. In fact, you perpetuate this idea that all women should be generalized based on the actions of one. You have nothing in common with Nicki and you're still arguing that her behavior defines you as a woman. That's a problem. That's problem number 1.

But I mean seriously, where do you get off saying that she doesn't respect herself? Who are you to say that? Yes, I understand. A woman can't wear a thong AND respect herself. I laugh at this because this is the same type of comment that's been made about women for centuries. It used to be if a woman's ankles showed, she didn't respect herself.

I hope you realize that your kind of thinking is the same line of thinking that justifies the bullying and abuse of female p0rn stars while male p0rn stars remain unscathed. The more s-xual a woman is, the less worth she has as a human. The more s-xual a man is, the more of a man he is.

Your argument angers and saddens me. Why is female s-xuality inversely related to respectability when male s-xuality isn't? Sexism. Your argument is s-xist and I've come to expect so much more from you.

I love you

Honestly the video is a masterpiece video wise compared to Stupid Hoe. Its a bit frustrating that the dislikes will be SO high as the video spreads more because it is actually a good music video and does its job well (in my opinion at least  )

I hope Nicki takes the controversy and uses it as more time to change minds on the double standards towards women's s-xuality

To anyone thinking this influences little girls and makes them become s-xual at a younger age, coming from someone who was one at some point, I never looked at these videos and went "I'm gonna do the same", I just thought they were odd and cringey to watch :toofunny:

If you get influenced by stuff like this at an early age, that says way more about you than the artist.

No, Miley holds the record with 19.3 million with Wrecking Ball. I don't know where Shake It Off ended up, and we're waiting for official numbers for Anaconda.

you must be really fun at parties

Wow, what an immature response. Not only am I not a prude, the objectification of women is hardly a subject I delve into at parties. What is with this correlating a more reserved attitude towards s-x to being a killjoy? That is one of the many problems that I'm pointing out is wrong with society.

:tea: AGREED with everything. Expressing one's s-xuality is not AND should never be a hindrance to upholding one's artistic integrity. To say that one discredits the other is nothing but a fallacy highlighting the worst of s-xism.

It doesn't cancel out artistic integrity, but depending on the severity of it, can cause potential talent to be squandered. I would much rather Nicki sang about real stuff that's happening to her in life and tried to create something for everyone to enjoy. Instead, she continues to make cheap s-x songs that only appeal to a niche audience and repel everyone else and win her no critical acclaim. Yes, you can be s-xual and have talent, but make your work more about s-x than talent and it's problematic. There's plenty of songs that are s-xual without degrading the artist's talent. But stuff like Anaconda could be made by anyone, especially considering most of it is sampled from another song.

Once again, we are telling women that they can be s-xual, but not too s-xual. Women in bikinis or thongs are in countless rap videos from men. As are misogynistic lyrics that objectify women. Ok, you've gotten completely the wrong idea. I am not against a woman's right to be s-xual, but I do have an issue with anyone, male or female, exhibiting hyper s-xuality in public. It's can corrupt impressionable young people (by which I mean they can try to copy it), it's not the kind of thing you want to see in day to day life and it creates very unsavoury expections of acceptable human s-xuality. Nicki is not the sole problem behind society's s-xualisation of women, but she's one participant in it. Women are encouraged to s-xualise themselves - most women have consciously, or unconsciously, s-xualised themselves in a variety of ways. And we start doing it from alarmingly early ages. You know that there are now little girls twerking like Nicki after seeing this video because they see a cool celebrity doing it and it's considered an attractive action. They don't realise the danger in this behaviour. Just so we're clear, I think men s-xualising themselves in popular culture is a problem too and I don't condone that either (it actually sickens me how any man who works out is bayed at by women to take his shirt off). I don't support objectifying of either gender. And it's funny that you bring up p0rn stars, because I'm against p0rnography partly for the physical and mental pain that the actors go through and how their job lowers their feelings of self worth.

I'm sorry if I've saddened you and rest assured, that wasn't my intention. I think it's just so easy for any argument critiquing an element of s-xuality to be misunderstood. Once again, this is a huge problem in society. Question the morality of anything to do with s-x and you're accused of slut shaming, treating s-x like the enemy and being a prude. Don't you think that's problematic too?

I hope Nicki takes the controversy and uses it as more time to change minds on the double standards towards women's s-xuality.

This video does nothing to challenge the double standards towards women's s-xuality and the song certainly doesn't. It reinforces every stereotype of women and especially of black women - that they're nothing but s-x objects and bodies rather than people. Not once is Nicki's personality valued in the song, it's all about her body. It's weird how we're told that when a woman strips off, she's challenging the double standard. But men don't strip to their underwear to flaunt their confidence and power, so why should women? If women want to challenge the double standard, they should act exactly how men do in their videos - remain fully clothed. Fully clothed men and scantily clad/naked women is the norm, after all, so what do we stand to achieve by continuing to display it?

To anyone thinking this influences little girls and makes them become s-xual at a younger age, coming from someone who was one at some point, I never looked at these videos and went "I'm gonna do the same", I just thought they were odd and cringey to watch :toofunny:

Maybe not you, but lots of other girls have, me included. It took me a long time to shake off society's damaging ideals about s-xuality and adopt my own way of thinking. But plenty of girls never question what society makes them believe. It doesn't make them weak willed as you might suggest. Different personality types absorb messages differently and your upbringing in general is a big part of how you view s-x as an adult. And not every child has parents who teach them the facts of life or monitor what media they're accessing. Put the two together and you end up with a child whose knowledge about s-x is completely gained from the media's output and that is dangerous. Sex is regarded as cool, exciting and an entry into the adult world, and without any guidance or monitoring about it, a child will grow up with some extremely warped views about it. And then these warped views continue into adulthood, where these ideas are less likely to change.

I didn't say that It did :awkney: I was referring to her using the single's cover to show a double standard in society -- shes certainly capable of changing the focus of the conversation to something more positive and productive and I said that it'd be nice if she could do the same with this Anaconda video's reception. The rest of your response seems to not really be directed at me --- seeing as I didnt actually give an opinion of the song or the video in my post. I simply replied to another person with a tangent comment  Im not going to pretend to speak for any women on this or give some all knowing answer to your seemingly rhetorical questions because I think its a lot more complicated than what I could come up with @ 10 pm while I'm doing my homework, The one thing i'll say is that we aren't "told that when a woman strips she is challenging the double standard" --- Thats not always the case, its up to the person themselves to show or explain their intentions in some way, Actions alone don't always speak loud enough and the world LOVES to assume the worst of women :awkney:

I think the lyrics are supposed to be explicit in a way that almost mocks how men objectify and s-xualize women btw

Well, it's nice to see a better natured post aimed at me. I didn't have an issue with the cover, actually. Before I heard the song, I thought it was actually a very striking, cool-looking cover. Very s-xual, yes, but it had an iconic look about it that somehow made it an ok kind of provocative. I mean, I'm a Gaga fan, so obviously I'm not opposed to s-xual imagery. But the awful song ruined it. Now I just see it as another cheap, common image. You're allowed to have your opinion, of course, but personally, I don't think this is meant to be a parody. Nicki's bragged about her ass and objectified herself in previous songs and this is no different. Parodies of objectification are usually done by artists who make a point of not s-xualising themselves, that way it comes across loud and clear that it's a parody. But Nicki's videos, songs, fashion and personality are always zany and OTT, so this wacky video is not a change of pace that would suggest a parody. And a parody usually makes subtle digs at certain ideologies in the lyrics and uses sarcasm and Anaconda definitely doesn't do that.

Ur right, I don't think the entire package is actually supposed to be a parody or carry any kind of super obvious powerful message about women's s-xuality, but I do think Nicki feels that way about it regardless
