Do you think Gaga invented her own genre of music?

Interesting question. Don't know. But what I can say for sure that when I pay close attention to Gaga's instrumentals for example (let alone her lyrics and melodies), I realize that she makes dance-pop like no one else.

Unlike her contemporaries, she has her hand in every facet of production. That, combined with her inherent musicality and adoration for all kinds of genres and sub-genres, result in a sound that is theatrical yet nuanced, bombastic yet deeply personal, varied and eclectic yet a truly singular vision. Maybe I'm crazy and hearing things, but I could easily pick out a Gaga song from a mile away.

No sorry.  ;)

she has her distinct sound just like all artists but she didnt invent a genre, not yet at least. Not one single artist can invent a genre, art builds upon itself.

I agree. I don't think Gaga's changed much in terms of the genre of music itself (she's definitely influenced trends), but she's made herself distinguishable within the genre of pop, imo.

Isn't that how all genres started though? People using what already existed and turning into something different that better fit their style.

Nah. She just takes what's already there and makes it her own.

It isn't really a genre she's created, it's just her personal style. Just like EVERY artist has their own personal style. Rihanna's music is as different from Katy Perry's music as Lady Gaga's music is as different to Eminem's music.

Well, having a signature sound doesn't equate to creating a new genre.

Also ARTPOP is a concept that seems to be loosely defined genre-wise if you wanted to argue that (and art pop apparently was an obscure "genre" attributable to some past artists, so I bet if you said she invented it someone might debate on that too).

But she's brought together a lot of different musical influences over the years from disco, glam rock, EDM, metal, stadium rock, R&B, etc. along with her unique singing voice, that have come together to create a sound that is very recognizably hers. Her own genre? Well, I don't know about that.

Yes why? I think I ask him a fair question.

you could have had a point with born this way

this is what i would consider making a new genre

I get what you are saying, but I think her music overall has that distinct Gaga style.

it can't be distinct if there's too many obvious influences

personally, not invented, but reinvented, before 2008 pop music sucked tbh, when gaga made it big, other artist began to make an attempt at mimicking her performance of synthpop and edgy, avant-garde style, but they failed.

she's changed the music industry, even rappers add electronica/techno beats into their stuff, female rappers even completely left their genre.

so no not invented, but reinvented yes:)

There is obvious influences in hard rock and metal from classic rock artists (in fact that is where these genres came from), so does that mean they are not distinct?
