Best VEVO audio vs. best YouTube audio for music videos (LONG POST)

Alright, guys, I've made some surprising new findings: I know I've stated previously that VEVO 1080p trumps YouTube 1080p both in terms of video and audio. But now I have another question (that I think I've answered): does the 192kbps audio stream from VEVO 1080p videos trump the 256kbps stream available for YouTube videos? (With the dash playback style on YouTube, the video and audio streams are totally separate, but synchronized in playback. It is only through dash playback that 256kbps audio is available, as far as I know. (Need more info on dash playback? Google it.)) Or does the YT 256kbps audio stream, in fact, trump VEVO's 192kbps audio stream?

(Note: the 256kbps YT audio stream, as well as the 1080p just-video stream, can actually be downloaded using a program called youtube-dl. YES 1080p YOUTUBE VIDEO CAN BE DOWNLOADED, EVERYONE.)

I decided to investigate this myself using the Applause music video (yes I'm using that video once again). For both audio streams, I inverted the music video audio stream against a lossless, FLAC version of Applause (after syncing the streams up by sample, of course), and after amplifying the music video audio stream by 6 dB to double the volume (to match the volume of the album version of Applause). In terms of the resulting audio, which is essentially the difference between the two streams, I detected more a bit more volume – therefore, more loss of quality in music video audio stream – with the VEVO 192kbps test than with the YT 256 kbps test. (Trust me: I went over this several times to verify my findings.)

I have therefore come to the conclusion that in terms of AUDIO stream, this 256kbps YT stream actually BEATS VEVO's 192kbps audio stream in terms of quality. That said, I still retain my previous claim that VEVO's VIDEO stream quality is better that the YT video stream quality, for reasons I have explained on the Video sub-forum.

TL;DR: My new findings indicate that for music video streams, YT's best audio trumps VEVO's best audio, but VEVO's best video trumps YT's best video.

Because of this, I am considering muxing together the YT 256kbps audio with the VEVO 5200kbps (1080p) video for the music videos using FFmpeg (this would not affect the quality one bit, as it is simply muxing, not re-encoding). I hereby dub this new project...

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

:derpga:

When I get the chance, I will be downloading the YT 256kbps audio stream for each of the music videos, and muxing those audio streams with the VEVO VIDEO streams. When I have finally done this, I'll make a thread in the Video sub-forum about it.

You guys think this is a good idea? Also, can any other "audio nerds" here on GGD do the same experiment I did (or any other worthwhile experiment if you can think of any) to verify (or disprove) these findings, then post results in this thread?? It would be much appreciated for those of us in the GGD Audiophile community  :flutter:. (This is why I'm posting this in Audio as opposed to Video or the general Media section.)

To those who can do the aforementioned experiment to verify or disprove these new findings:

NOW GET TO WORK, BITCH  :whip:

So in conclusion - better audio is on YouTube right?

Assuming I'm not going crazy, then yes.

About the audio, I'm not really sure about how much the Vorbis audio (from the webm streams) and the AAC audio compare on quality, on Youtube. I tried a--lysing them but still haven't come to a conclusion of which one is truly the best one, it seems to be variable depending on the source. But yes, they are, both, better than the VEVO counterpart.

And the video on VEVO- yes it is MUCH HIGHER QUALITY. But sometimes, it's cropped. For example: You & I is easily noticeable, the Youtube video is 2.35:1 and the one on VEVO is practically 16:9 - you lose a lot of image.

Actually, it's different: You & I on YT is a full 1920x1080 resolution, but that's only because black bars have been added to the top and bottom to make it a full 1920x1080 resolution video as opposed to 1920x816. The YT video is essentially a letterboxed version of the VEVO video.

Regarding WebM (Vorbis) vs mp4 (AAC) audio: I have also experimented with comparing the two, but there is no legit 256kbps Vorbis (WebM) option. What is sometimes listed by youtube-dl as a 256kbps WebM (Audio) (aka Vorbis audio) option is really the same quality as the rest of the HQ WebM audio. However, with 128kbps audio or 192kbps audio, Vorbis mostly wins.

About the video, yes, that is the case in some videos, but in others, the VEVO video is actually hard-zoomed to fit 16:9 :/

You can compare frames from both and see there are some frame areas missing.
