Apparently, Katy has a Walmart deal or something like that for PRISM.

I think it'll definitely help her album opening weeks.

A ~2.5M selling hit (my rough estimate of how much Applause will sell within a year of release) might be lower than we were expecting or hoping for, but it's certainly nothing to scoff at. If she can churn out two more multiplatinum singles, the era will be a success singles-wise as far as I'm concerned.

This is speaking in terms of America only btw.

In no way, am I scoffing at it-thank god it sold what it did. But I am going to say that as a lead single, it didn't do great, especially in certain countries, cough* UK/France/Australia *cough. It needed to sell at least 3 million in US to qualify as a big hit and sell at least 2 million elsewhere in the world for a total of 5 million. This had to happen considering it was her lead single and first real new music after 2.25 years. Also, I tend to speak in worldwide terms ;)

:lmao: how delusional. By the standards you're setting for Gaga, Diamonds wasn't a smash either. It had a mediocre debut and barely passed the 3x mark. So go ahead have your ridiculous expectations but please leave it out of this thread.

Too many people here coming to spill their insecurities about Applause recently. Take it to that chart flop thread or whatever.

how wrong you are. Diamonds sold 7.5 million worldwide and at least it gets to cross the 3 million mark in the US during its own era. Applause will only cross the 2 million mark after its respective era is over. This thread is about the US charts and I am going to voice this opinion on here because it is a legitimate opinion that I am backing up with statistics. I am also not calling Applause a flop; I am merely saying it underperformed, at least by my own standards for Gaga. Hell, if Katy and Rihanna can do it, Gaga should do it to.

If there was a huge correlation between having a 3 million selling lead single and a 500k album debut, I'd worry.

Rihanna success with last two lead singles didn't give her (a) great album sales or (b) guarantee more than two hits total for the era.

JT and Drake didn'twon't sell more than 3 millions with their leads this year either, and they debuted over 600k.

Lately most of the big selling singles are one hit wonders who sell very little in way of albums.

If I were to think of any retailer that would strike up a deal with Katy, Wal-Mart would come to mind immediately :fan:

But who's to say Applause won't cross 3M eventually?

True. It might or might not cross 3M in the US, but I wanted it to sell atleast 5 million worldwide, and that, unfortunately is not going to happen. Also I think 2 million is guaranteed by the end of the Applause era, at its current rate. Diamonds sold 3 million by the end of its era. Roar will sell 3.5/maybe 4 million by the end of its era. So that's my problem...

Oh yeah Gaga will slay in album sales, without a doubt. I am only focusing on her singles.

Gaga has a lot of obstacles in her career as a pop artist. Not only does she have the disadvantage of being perceived as a "weirdo" since the BTW era, thus not a s-x symbol, she has less core demographics than the two you mentioned. She has less radio support, obviously. Her songs aren't designed to be multi-format hits like those two. Most of the time, only pop radio supports Gaga. So when you see that Gaga is selling half of Katy Perry with half the airplay, don't take it as much of a surprise. It's not 2009 anymore. Gaga is not the it girl anymore. Your high sales expectations put stress on the people in this thread and negatively affects people's perception of Gaga even more than it already is.

I don't know where you come off saying Gaga has the same advantages as Rihanna or Katy Perry. She obviously doesn't.

That would make sense because they usually have a food court with a McDonald's, too :fan:

So you would rather have me lower my expectations for an artist who has 20 times the talent of Katy Perry and Rihanna only for the purpose of not "negatively affecting people's perception of Gaga." At least I am trying to look at her sales objectively and not just automatically keep it within the sphere of Gaga and saying I'm satisfied with Applause. Why can't Gaga be the it girl and maintain a longevity in her career. Katy and Rihanna can do it. She has the talent and superior music to back herself up therefore I am going to root for the highest success for her and make that my ultimate expectation.  :rip:
