A Stan Was Born 670
Genuinely curious: When people say BTW era harmed Gaga what does it really mean? BTW album and single sold well, Judas flopped due to controversy yet she rebounded with TEOG and Y&I. Since MTN flopped, therefore most people don't even have it bought and barely remember it, how could the era have harmed her in terms of Applause sales? Her image during that entire time was very polarizing. Many saw her as shocking for the sake of shock. So many news articles and blogs wanted her to take a break. She listened, which I guess was the right thing to do. The only reason a lot of those singles did well was because of intense promotion, which also led to overexposure. What is OBAMA 0
Genuinely curious: When people say BTW era harmed Gaga what does it really mean? Since MTN flopped, therefore most people don't even have it bought and barely remember it, how could the era have harmed her in terms of Applause sales? she literally was EVERYWHERE during the first 10months of 2011, seriously, she built too much hype for the material then it didn't deliver she got a bit obnoxious at the eyes of the media because everytime she was there she'd only say the same stuff about BTW over and over again i guess the fact that she couldn't start a tour shortly after BTW premiered(because TMB had just ended) really hurt her 'cuz as she is so obsessed with always performing(although i think she's over that now ) she felt the need to go everywhere like every week to promote the single on top of that the whole era was messy, she released 3 official singles before the album went on sale, radios at some point didn't even know what to play, + the material wasn't GP friendly although she was trying to convice everyone it was i still like the album but i mantain the whole production feels rushed it's like her label saw how big she was and wanted to take advantage of it so they could get frontloaded sales of everything, and t worked 'cuz BTW(single) went platinum in 10 days and BTW(album) sold like 2M copies worldwide in its openning week
Tommymonster44 0
Genuinely curious: When people say BTW era harmed Gaga what does it really mean? BTW album and single sold well, Judas flopped due to controversy yet she rebounded with TEOG and Y&I. Since MTN flopped, therefore most people don't even have it bought and barely remember it, how could the era have harmed her in terms of Applause sales? First off, remember that TF was shooting out number one singles like there was no tomorrow. It's pretty standard for a rerelease like TFM to chart lower than the original release, though, so everyone just excused that. But they did expect Gaga to go back to shooting out number ones with BTW. Obviously this didn't happen. It became clear that she isn't going to be an artist that consistently spits out number ones. We now know that TF was the exception. Before BTW, people were predicting that the rest of her career would go like that. Secondly, and probably more importantly, is the radio. Program Directors don't want to play polarizing songs that will turn off their audience. That's why a song take weeks to peak on the radio. They are slowly dipping the song into the water inch by inch to make sure the listeners are still giving them the go-ahead. Because of this, the radio will evaluate how an artist's previous singles have performed in order to decide how quickly and frequently they will adopt an artist's newer work. It's actually amazing that TEOG rebounded so quickly after Judas. For any other artist besides Gaga, a single like that could have easily caused the rest of the era to flop into oblivion. The main concern, though, is MTN since it only peaked in the top 30. First off, let's not make the radio out as the bad guys here. Pop radio truly believed in MTN. It peaked at around 15 and was added on all of the major radio stations before it even went top 100 on iTunes. It's sales never caught up, unfortunately. This over calculation of MTN by the radio is what caused Applause to gain so slowly. If an artist's previous era had a killer chart run, they will be more apt to instantly stockpile their new material (see Katy Perry). In Gaga's case, the failure of her last single caused everyone to be more reluctant about playing Applause.

This, I think, is the real point here since the other stuff like her reaching and polarising persona did not stop TEOG and Yuyi from selling well considering they're the third and fourth singles. hausofmike 127
MESS @ SS losing over 200 spins today on Pop. Falling faster than I expected. It MIGHT snatch #5 but only if SS falls fast enough & Wrecking Ball stops increasing so much. The song already peaked. Are u that surprised?
