DANCESEXARTPOP 0
I'm just remembering that I HATED Bad Romance the first time I heard it. I thought Gaga was over, i really was put off her very quickly. But then I saw the video...and the rest is history. Back O/T though, I get similar feeling for applause. The areas where the song lacks in at the moment can be easily compensated for by a killer video. We shall see
Delete 258
Here is my honest opinion of "Applause" When I first listened to the song, I was honestly disappointed. I found it to be awkward, loud, and messy. The snippets actually gave me a different perception of what it was going to be. On top of that "Aura" had just leaked and that song was so good. I guess you could say I initially felt that a demo was better than one of her actual songs. So even after multiple listens, and still no spark of excitement I decided just to let it sink in for awhile. Then, once I had some time to think about the song, katy perry, perez hilton, and chart sales....I decided to let those things go, and give it a good real listen. Not thinking about success or the general public, I was able to appreciate the song much better. Now after many days of listening, I am madly in love with the song. The lyrics and the melody are brilliant, and It's experimental but not too experimental. Is it her best song to date....? Actually, I kind of think so. After ditching the drama and starting the music, I got to see how Gaga is progressing as an artist, yet going back to her roots and what made her popular to begin with. Compliquee 1
I do genuinely like the song, but I think the Koons line/pop culture line just throws the whole thing. But the chorus is amazing. It's always stuck in my head. It's definitely not a straight forward lyric but it's brilliant that she put those lines in the lead single for ARTPOP: it introduces the album's core principles perfectly: pop performance as an art form rather than pop culture as a subject-- a complete inversion of the original "pop art" movement. Homogenik 5
It's definitely not a straight forward lyric but it's brilliant that she put those lines in the lead single for ARTPOP: it introduces the album's core principles perfectly: pop performance as an art form rather than pop culture as a subject-- a complete inversion of the original "pop art" movement. Personally I think you're reading too much into it. This idea of art joining (finally) with pop doesn't make sense as art has always reached the masses through various pop expressions, musical or other. It's one thing to affirm that art is in you but it's another to demonstrate, and this is a rather straightforward pop song, which is fine. I really like the music, it's very enjoyable, but dislike the needy ego-pushing lyrics. They might make more sense as part of the whole album though, especially since it's the final song. If it's part of a journey the album takes you through, that's fine, but if it's just "hey look at me and love me"... So I guess it's better to hold off judgement until I listen to the whole album. PatrickMonster 6,379
I loved it at the first couple listens. But then I really started to feel like... it's kinda empty and very repetitive. I don't even know what to think about it, because there are so many doubts in me about it being a lead single, that I'm just confused. I still like it, but it's definitely her weakest lead single yet, maybe it could be on a similar level with Just Dance. I really wanted from her a huge disco-banger EDM hit, that would completely slay the people in clubs. I feel like its really far from a song that could be played in a club. At least where I live, the beat is not hard enough. I dont see any straight club playing it in my country. Hopefully the performances and the music video can change my mind about it, but right now I feel like it was a mistake to release it. 10/
MelbHawker 6,583
After ditching the drama and starting the music, I got to see how Gaga is progressing as an artist, yet going back to her roots and what made her popular to begin with. Listening to it again now.. The Vocals should have been dominant to the music in the chorus. Not the other way round.
iloveit123 130
The song is very cute and fun. But I expected more from her.
LaLuna 12,732
In and of itself, the song is okay. It's a catchy song with a great beat, and that's it. Nothing iconic or memorable like Bad Romance or even Born This Way. As a lead single, I feel it's a little weak and safe. I feel the rest of the album will be much edgier and better. Born To Slay 10,996
Review: Lady Gaga's new single Applause is pure dance pop perfection and is definitely working worth looking at. The lyrics while weird actually makes sense and the chorus is heavily infections and while Lady Gaga spells Applause she chants "make it real loud" and "put your hands up make em touch" it makes the song sound beautiful. Gaga's vocals sound great and don't get lost in the production, which is also great, despite sounding a little like Turn Up The Radio in the intro the chorus build up is great and I give this song a perfect score and the idea this song almost didn't make the album means Gaga has a lot more magic on ARTPOP. travelandart 0
So I just wanted to say that I think this song is really fun and danceable. I'm a fan of both madonna and lady gaga, equally, and I love them both. I'm glad to see that it's a song that can't really be compared to a specific madonna song, and that people are viewing it as a cool, catchy dance song. I don;t think gaga really was looking to make a massive insane record her first single, she's smart enough to know that a simple, catchy dance song is a good way to get positive appreciation and attention from a wide variety of people. It's better that many people like it than just the die hard fans. Other thoughts of mine are the following: I think we fans should stop running around advertising applause and making posters and stuff. It makes her look a bit weak and desperate. The music can and SHOULD speak for itself. Lady gaga definitely knows and believes in that. Also, one reason people like katy perry is bc her fans don't overwhelm the "general public" with promotion. (NO disrespect to anyone in particular it just worries me). Finally, I just want to say, if the fanbase slows down and eventually stops with the gaga promotion, i think it will inevitably be better to gaga's career. Nonetheless, even if Applause doesn't hit number one in the us, or she isn't liked by everyone at the moment, she is, as a star, more impactful and prominent than katy perry or other pop stars of this generation. In 10 years, she'll still be going strong, she will be further evolved, and people will look back at her in a positive way. Take madonna as an example. When her music first came out, and even up to her 5th or 6th album, the public was both mesmerized and exasperated by her highly s-xual, controversial sound and image. The public was divided on her. But now she is appreciated by so many people. SHe wasn't easy to swallow, like katy perry is, or michael jackson WAS. (i list kp and mj because they both had 5 number ones on one album, which = very popular). Neither madonna nor lady gaga will have ever had 5 no 1s on an album bc their music is dividing. But regardless, it's culturally IMPACTFUL. Even if people say Gaga is unoriginal, copies, makes songs about things she doesn't know anything about. People said the same about madonna, maybe even worse. But she and her fanbase pushed through and she was smart about manipulating pop culture. And people now overlook the negatively critical moments. Gaga can also be this type of icon, by continuing to make music about original ideas, and subjects. Nobody has written a song about applause, or fame to the extent she has, and that is just an example of this original perseverance that will be, in the long run, positive for her career. This is on topic, and it is about the song, not just gaga as an artist.

Bambino 24,237
It's her best best/most interesting single ever but it's a very good song with an interesting theme. I love her vocals in the song.

Conqueror 18
Applause: Love retro video game sounding intro Love chorus Love final chorus with the crowd Hate the vocal delivery of the verses Don't like the lyrics I'd love to see her to sing the verses differently in her performances It's nothing new to be honest. It's a mediocre pop song but will have a great video and loads of great performances.
Chase 407
I love it, but I really feel like after all this wait, she could have included a bridge, at least.
