boysboysboys 278
Well, not BAD, but not good enough to make it a big hit or have any kind of considerable longevity. Disagree there. It does have radio longevity potential.
Ozzy8923 9
What exactly is, then? A good song. JK. But, in all seriousness, I think that Applause just doesn't connect to the GP [you can't really sing along to the verses, you can't really sing along to the chorus, and you can't really understand the entire message of the song]. Upon immediate reaction, I DID think this song was commercial and GP friendly, but I don't really feel the same way anymore. And I didn't wanna be the one to say this, but it rings to me a lot like Judas. Abrasive verses [though not nearly as abrasive as Judas's] and HEAVY production that kinda drowns out the vocals. I don't exactly think the video or the VMA's will be much help either.

The song can be sung, the theme is understandable and it's nowhere like Judas at all :)
A Stan Was Born 670
Judas really did as bad as it did because of the religious controversy. Once that video got released, the song tanked.
chris777 112
My problem with the song is that is not really memorable. It lacks about something and idk what it is. It's a really good song but i feel something is missing. ...... 5. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop 0.3348 6. Lady Gaga - Applause 0.3162 7. Avicii - Wake Me Up 0.3197 She will be #7 for sure. I hope she stays there

But, alas, we'll see what the video and the VMA's do before we jump any more fences with our predictions.
Shaney 5,515
Hopefully once it officially impacts radio it will pick up strength. When you're in a predicament like Gaga, releasing the best song on the album as the first single would have been the best choice I think. Idk, i'm kind of wary of how this song is gunna do, I don't think it will go #1.

I don't exactly think the video or the VMA's will be much help either. I completely agree. When I first heard Applause, my immediate response was that its simple chorus would translate into connectivity with the public, but honestly, the production (while sounding really good) distorts the vocals so much that I even have trouble connecting with it. I personally have trouble liking Applause, and it wouldn't surprise me if the public felt the same. It is quite reminiscent of Judas. The verses are more comparable to Bad Romance than Judas, but they are tough to make sense of, which can't be good for public reception. The more I listen to Applause, the weaker I rank it among Gaga's singles. Who knows, though. Maybe the video really will have a big influence on the way we think of the song. craig 680
What Gag thinks is the "best song" is probably a really personal or experimental weird song. Not "most likely to be a radio hit." Applause isn't any more abrasive than Bad Romance. And i always hated the noisy Marry The Night production and thought it was risky.
A Stan Was Born 670
I don't think Applause is honestly as noisy as any song on Born This Way... It is kind of loud, but Born This Way was something else. I don't think that can hurt success of the song.
MANiCURE1295 8,673
I really love Applause. I think it's one of her strongest singles since Telephone honestly. I think the prechorus and chorus are really catchy. And I don't think the lyrics in the chorus are THAT hard to hear, but that's just my opinion. Radio updates have been great and with promo coming up I think the song could become quite popular (I pray to God)
