Royals is my jam...

Like obviously I don't dance to it, it's not a dance song.  But Royals and Applause are my two favorite songs right now.  Not every song has to be upbeat for it to be great.

The video is really interesting and shines a new light on the song.  It's basically how about these affluent kids go and get messed up with violence and d--gs, but when it gets to be too much, they recede back into their money and luxury. Really applicable and a real social statement in this day and age if you ask me.

The song also talks about how Lorde doesn't get high off of doing these things.  She craves a different kind of buzz.

Plus, this girl is only 16 and writes her own music! For a 16 year old to write a song this mature and insightful is amazing!  The rest of her EP is amazing, too.

I never even implied that a song had to be upbeat to be great. There have been many great downtempo pop songs this past year.

It has nothing to do with the tempo. Royals is just so bland to me. There's nothing that stands out.

Stay by Rihanna keeps me, and apparently 3.5 million other Americans, captivated with the soothing yet prominent piano instrumental.

Royals does nothing to keep my attention.

I don't care if you like the song, and my post definitely was aimed just at (I sort of went off on a tangent rant).  But to act like this girl doesn't deserve success is ridiculous, even if you don't like her style.  Obviously a lot of people are in love with this song because it shot up on iTunes before it was picked up by the radio.

Royals is a better ballad than Stay or the Pink one that was big.

Lyrics are interesting and not about an overdone subject (love, break-ups). I think it's about "the fame"

Instrumentation is fresh. Like how she sings  "roy-als and I'll-rule." Not your standard R&B or piano ballad.

Do you guys think it will stay on Z100's PR tomorrow?

I ask this because when I'm at work I play whatever iHeart station is spinning it the most :hor:

But where did I say she didn't deserve her success?

Others may have said that but not me :awkney:

I do think Monday will be rough though. Whatever, we'll get through it. The song has already achieved "hit" status so it's whatever. I know it's subjective, but I think anything over 60 AI's is like "sizeable hit" status.

Speaking of Ri, I wonder if What Now will be a hit. I'm sure it will be.
HAC/AC will gobble it up.
Pop/Rhythmic will too obviously.
But that potential HAC/AC support = another 100M A.I radio smash for Ri :emma:

Rih has no momentum though. Literally none. And What Now is like the weakest song on that album :wtf:

She could have gone with a completely innovative sound with Lost In Paradise

Sorry, I didn't mean to direct that part at you.  Rather I started talking about the theme of the song and why I actually do like it, and then went off on a tangent because there are a lot of other people here who seem to hate her for some reason.

I still hope it's a sizable top 10 hit for her. I really like the song, and that album in general.

There's a chance What Now might do worse than Right Now. Of course, radio will play anything she releases, but Right Now's sales were horrific, and I don't see any reason why What Now's sales will be any better.

Not necessarily! We have learned that with Right Now!

I think radio has reached the level of confidence with Katy that literally anything she puts out will be a smash..BECAUSE of the radio support. The thought of her flopping on radio is just... I can't even see it :smh:

Right Now's support on radio was pretty good when compared to its TERRIBLE sales. 57M A.I btw

Momentum doesn't seem like a problem for Rihanna
Man Down and California King Bed flopped so hard and then Cheers came out...
