Pop 4,541
I'm praying the video and the performance turn it around next week, because things aren't looking up right now. The Taylor Brigade: KNOCKOUT

Emvee 8,525
I agree that songs that are blatantly relatable are the most successful. Although I think Applause could've been relatable depending on her writing style and her writing style in the song is just sort of bad imo. Its not something you can really sing along to its sort of just awkward. I'm not here to be the bad guy or pick apart Applause, because I DO love the song. I think it does it's job conveying the message. The Bowie esque vocals are totally part of the overall concept. The fast pace, the lyrics... They all do their job. Was Applause a good lead single choice? Hell no. At this point, even Aura would've been a better choice. ****, the burqa controversy would've done wonders for it, commercially. Michael 533
Give me examples of #1 songs in the past 5 years that weren't about love or having a good time. Music is music because it connects the masses and it connects to the individual. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying its improbable. Besides, from what I've been understanding, Gaga has already fulfilled her goal. The fans loved the Applause. That's all she wanted. Harlem Shake springs to mind. But aside from that, some of the biggest songs of all time have been completely unrelatable and non-nonsensical. Thriller and Bohemian Rhapsody anyone? stackhouse 3
Just because it's #3 on the iTunes chart doesn't mean it will be #3 on the Billboard chart ... She is doing much better than Katy in streaming

She would've lost a significant amount of followers for that considering how prevalent social justice issues are online these days. She would've been slammed hard. I don't think Applause is a well crafted pop song, i'll just say that much and I don't think it will have longevity. Not because Gaga isn't capable but because I don't think the song is all that great.
Tresor 1,649
The argument that 'a song needs to be relatable in order to be successful' is complete garbage and bull****. Um well it certainly helps e.x. katy's entire career.

GHGUY 230
You guys seriously need to get real.... The BTW era damaged her image and she is in no way shape or form at the same momentum she once was.. I am surprised she even debuted this well she has a lot of winning over to do with the media/GP so I expect her to be back on too by the end of the album era... Pop 4,541
Applause is Gaga talking about being Gaga. While it's interesting to us hardcore fans, I'm not sure the GP is here for that. I love the track and think it is amazing, but it is yet to be seen if its infectious melody and production is enough for it to explode. All will be known next week.
