Lana Del Rey chose to portray herself in this manner while the men on the other covers wore suits.

Men with good bodies would gladly pose like Lana in equal numbers IF it would excite women and gain admiration in the same way as when a beautiful women does it.

I hear Miley on the wrecking ball inspired more than one guy to be filmed doing the same.

I bet Bieber wishes it was as easy for a guy to use a bit of nudity to make his image grown up.

But that argument would work more if they were forced into it, but when it's them who are agreeing with and wanting to do that type of work then it's obviously what they feel works best for them. If Lorde doesn't approve of that then by all means she can say it as much as she wants, it is her opinion, but her opinions will come with criticism and disagreements. I just feel that if it's the artist's personal choice to be portrayed in whatever way they feel works, then by all means go for it.

Whether their forced into it or not doesn't affect how women and men are disproportionately portrayed though.

These women are usually just falling into the same gender roles they have constantly been exposed too and raised under and the continual perpetuation of these gender stereotypes aren't going to go away or change unless people start pointing it out.

I suppose that is the point though isn't it? Women gain admiration through their looks and men through their talents.

And if that works for them and makes them feel most comfortable then more power to them. If others don't like that, then they can do that through their work.

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

There is almost as much BS about acting masculine or macho or having street cred that male artists have to deal with.

Women will go crazy for Timberlake or Bieber or 1D without them taking off their clothes or having amazing talent  ... but the price is being despised out of envy by most males.

She's not full on slamming Selena though. Same goes for her Lana comments. She just thinks the way they portray themselves in their music is anti-feminist. I don't think it's any reason to be mad at her  :sweat:

They have every right to do that on a personal level and they have every right to develop their public image in anyway that makes them feel comfortable, but the image they do project clearly does affect how the public view them and it also further reinforces a lot of gender stereotypes.

It is certainly more than acceptable to point out the way that women are portrayed and criticise the fact that women are constantly portrayed as the weak and submissive s-x.

Of course, femininity is a weakness and masculinity is a strength.

So what's the solution? Force them to act in ways that don't conform?

No, I believe they both have their own strengths and their own downsides.

I don't think there is a simple solution and I think it is going to take a long time for men and women to be portrayed equally, but you can criticise and question the way men and women are portrayed.

Recognising the problem and making people aware that there is an unequal way in which men and women are portrayed is the first step to being able to address the issue.

I agree, I was speaking from the standpoint of how society in general sees it.

Masculinity = strength

Femininity = weakness.

A little OT but I was watching Mulan with my little cousins a few weeks ago. Mulan dressed up as a man the whole movie and that was seen as fine because being a man and being masculine is admirable. At the end the men dress as women and it is funny, because the men are seen as degrading themselves by acting feminine.

I just don't see society as a whole having such a large amount of people who still think that way. Sure there is still plenty of discrimination going on in places like the workforce with issues of equal pay and things like that, but I feel like we've largely moved pass the point where we allow song lyrics and posed photo shoots to influence our thinking like that.

I think the fact that women and men are still being portrayed to differently in the media is proof that these gender roles still exist. I think the fact these portrayals are so common and popular shows that these gender stereotypes still exist. What we see advertised to us on television and through our radio is a pretty good reflection of how society thinks.

I think the fact that boys are still given trucks and blocks to play with while girls are given dolls to make pretty still shows that men and women are conditioned into certain roles. I think it is important to recognise and call out the presentation of men and women we see in the media because, like I just said, it is a pretty good reflection of how society thinks and how societies thinking needs to change.
