Ne-Yo sued for keeping $284,000 advance after canceling show

Brown Boy Presents, Sri Lankan concert promoter, is suing Ne-Yo for refusing to return his advance after dropping out of a show.

The promoter inked a contract with Ne-Yo last year for a December 28, 2025, performance at Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The deal guaranteed Ne-Yo a flat fee of $325,000, plus potential ticket sale bonuses, travel and lodging.

Ne-Yo canceled the show in early December, claiming Brown Boy had violated their deal by only sending $284,000 of the promised advance payments and failing to book travel and accommodations as promised. Ne-Yo's team informed the promoter they would be keeping the $284,000 as damages for this alleged breach.

Brown Boy is alleging that Ne-Yo is really the one to have breached their contract. The lawsuit says Ne-Yo's team "materially hindered and frustrated" the promoter's work by demanding unreasonably expensive flights for 30 people that would have brought the total travel costs to nearly $93,000.

The promoter is now demanding that Ne-Yo's team return the $284,000 advance, plus cover the costs of canceling the show last-minute. That includes ticket refund charges, sponsor losses and venue and production expenses.

A spokesperson for Ne-Yo said that the claims are "categorically fraudulent and misleading," and that the rpomoter is actually the one that owes money for the bungled contract. "Brown Boy Presents was contractually obligated to pay Ne-Yo in full prior to the performance and cover roundtrip travel for Ne-Yo and his entire team," said Ne-Yo's spokesperson.
