It’s like someone’s shitty Chanel purse. That’s so much cooler than paying thousands for something that’s fresh out of the store and made of plastic.”

It's refreshing to hear a pop star hype sustainable consumption/materialism as more inherently more authentic and valuable than unsustainable materialism/consumerism.

Also: I saw her at LA Night 1 and wow...what a voice and what a banger crowd. So happy for the year she's having.

Newer and younger artists always have these kind of idealism, which is cool. 

But usually when reality hits, they will likely settle for better.

Fortunately, I’m old enough to know the difference between what’s authentic and what’s merely strategic marketing. There’s so much strategic marketing these days. She only says these things because they are socially desirable - to make herself appear more attractive and morally superior.

Her words lack substance.

In videos like "Hollywood," she glamorizes luxury, even walking out of a designer store with an XXL bag. She claims it’s satire, now also says she views luxury with skepticism. That’s all just cheap talk, because she has actively promoted the image of luxury as something to aspire to. Her videos garner millions of views, fueling and celebrating a consumerist lifestyle and she profits financially from it.

She reminds me of those stars who say, "Oh, it's so terrible how high rents are and how hard it is for poor people to find an apartment," and then own three homes ranging from Hawaii to the East Coast.

Then, she distances herself with a few words in an interview, words that carry nowhere near the weight of her actual actions. Her music is fantastic, but I won’t let myself be taken in by her.

I mean, this is great PR especially in the current climate.

But are we really surprised that a woman who grew up in a working class family, in a working class area in a deep red state and who has only just had any form of mainstream success is out here saying she has an issue with the greed of the celebrity culture she's barely been invited into?
