gagzus 24,022
Hey all, just wanted to make this thread quickly for anybody not sure what is and isn’t AI, since online there’s a lot of people conflating information right now. In its simplest form AI is a module that LEARNS over time for example Google, Amazon Alexa, Predictive text and even social media algorithms are all forms of AI. Because they remember details and use them to give you things like suggested posts, websites and more based on the information they know about you. here is a list of some things we use every day that are, in fact, AI: Spoiler Search Engine Optimisation (Google, Bing, Yahoo etc) Spam Filters for Email Fraud Detection in Banks Predictive Text Suggestions sections Algorithms on social media Scenario Predictions & Outcomes ”Remember Me” functions on websites Memories functions on social media/phone galleries Auto-Play & Shuffle functions VI is when user inputed code is used with a clear boundary, like for example in Spreadsheet formulas or automated factory machinery. They cannot “learn” or change their functions and outcomes unless YOU personally change it. Just thought I’d share this for anyone needing to know. EDIT: As for Generative AI specifically a simple definition is it is used to generate images, videos, audio etc using pre-established content that it’s trained on like people’s art, movies, voice modules, design styles, writing styles, layouts and more. It LEARNS based on what is most popular and most searched/used to create things, this is why things like for a while AI art heavily looked like Disney characters as it was quite a common one because those stylised animation styles were very popular and searched for, it’s also why its posters often have the same style a lot. Because that style is the most popular from the trained models amongst users. The reason it’s so bad for the environment is because it requires massive energy to generate something in a short period of time. Data centres are cheap skates and scrimp on the money for cooling fans and systems so instead use water. Other forms of AI don’t need as much energy because they don’t need to pool as much resources to for example; predict what word you’ll use in a text based on your typing patterns, or to compile a Google search list of websites, or to recommend a link in your algorithm. All of this is pre-existing information it’s showing you, whereas Gen AI has to collage together something “new”. bxr 2,498
Super quick question before the educational session: Dummy‘s or Dummies? Is this a guide for a particular Dummy‘s point of reference (possessive), or more of a guide for the general population of Dummies (plural)? I‘m terrible at grammar (note the lack of breaks, and emphasis on ellipses adorning the vast majority of my commentary, for instance—I’m human, so copy errors are part of my communicative flaws! AI can‘t relate ), so this is legitimately just an inquiry for context Looking forward to your comparative analysis! Spoiler

Purrrrrr 18,263
I feel like the difference between AI and generative AI should be mentioned at least? If it's for the dummies

If it's for the dummies I think most people understand what Gen AI is but don’t realise that a LOT of the stuff we actually use like algorithms, search engines and predictive text is also AI. The thread was mostly to inform people that beyond Gen AI we’ve always used AI. But I do see your point I will perhaps add it to the OP.
