Just generally in pop culture. The album is talked about less, made less noise at the time of release and people were initially surprised she went for a stadium tour in certain markets.

I don’t know if GP cares about such things at all… Like okay - she said in some interviews that it’s a rebrand and dyed her color red… - people who listen to radio, or add Dua’s songs to their playlists - barely care about all of that. All they care about is whether songs are bops or not.

Then "Training Season" became a victim of a muted reaction to a lead single, too.

Plus, she was releasing at the time when country was already dominating US, and new pop stars were aggressively emerging (Sabrina, Chapelle) and some huge acts releasing big albums too (Beyonce, Swift, Billie Eillish). It was not a good timing for a release from Dua

Honestly, I kind of lived for the RO era. Saw her on tour (the mic was ON for my show), and the vinyl sounds great on my speakers. Houdini is probably my fave song of hers and truly a moment where Parker's psychedelic-pop sensibilities in the production truly shined.

I don’t really think Houdini is particularly sophisticated, which is kind of my original point: for all intents and purposes, it’s a disco track with a modest indie psych twist, no more niche than its producer’s work, which has become insanely popular as of late (Tame Impala).
 

With that in mind, I think the approach kind of suffered twofold: the music heads and pop stans expected a massive rebrand, were disappointed that it was more of the same, the pop crowd/GP was also potentially underwhelmed by it being more of the same/just not super impressed by the tracks.

Houdini is genuinely a very good track. Love the clav in the production, the guitar tone, the synth chords/production, and the hook is a huge earworm.

Nah. It was just timed wrong and the roll out was botched.

They tried to ride the FN era wave as it was ending with Dance the Night. Rather than letting the break breath and create space for an organic build up of excitement for a new Dua album era. 
They released it just as the charts/radio etc start ramping up for Christmas and get taken over by Xmas singles and hits. 
They didn't release a music video until Jan 12th 2024, having released it on Nov 9th 2023. 
She didn't perform it live until Feb 4th 2024 at the Grammys which was a medley the upcoming single Training Season. So it got drowned out by a hit and focus was placed instead on the new girl. 

Meanwhile, Training Season's launch was botched because they premiered it at that Feb 4th performance but only as part of a medley with essentially dead weight. But then didn't release it for nearly 2 weeks afterwards. They just totally misunderstood the attention economy around music performances now in the tiktok generation. They tried to ride it without feeding it after the initial performance rather than dropping the single quickly and fueling the attention cycle.

I agree - releasing before Xmas was a mistake. 

But I think the MV premiered the same day on Nov.9th though

I'm surprised at the negative sentiment in this thread.

Honestly if there was one 'new gen' pop girl out there that i would predict is gonna stick around for the long haul, it's Dua. Even more so than Sabrina. I think Dua has the potential to become the next generation's Kylie Minogue.
