Its a very interesting strategy Americans use sometimes

Alieanate allies that are saturated with resources (ex: Canada, Northern Europe)... then spend a fortune on complicated operations to maybe unlock some supply elsewhere

I can see the logic of trying to isolate middle tier powers like Canada/North & Western Europe to force them into capitulating to American imperialism.
But the Americans forget that we've also been seeing China on the side for a while now...

Governments often choose to spend more than they take in from taxes. To make up the difference, they sell pieces of paper called bonds to banks, regular people, and other countries. As long as the country keeps growing and people trust it to pay them back later, the system keeps working. You can track current figures through the U.S. Treasury Fiscal Data site.

Well if the US could cut some military spending (and not just Iran war but overall annual defense spending) and raise taxes on wealthy a bit, the US could probably get the deficit at least below 3% of GDP pretty quickly. Eliminating it fully would take more comitment and tougher choices but at least getrinf it below 3% of GDP would pause and avert a crisis...

The economy (excluding recession times) grows, and inflation also raises economy size in nominal terms (even if there was no true GDP growth). This means the debt relative to the size of the US economy could be pauses from growing pretty quickly if there wae any political appetite to doing so but of course children run the US Government so no...

As for where the money goes and who it is owed to which @pachinko is also asking, the debt which is owed via bonds has tones of different sources it is financed from:

- Other Countries directly

- sovereign wealth funds

- pension funds

- Financial institutions or even other Corporations in other sectors that want to park cash

- individual investors

- Federal Reserve with printed money

Virtually anyone can buy government bonds. Anyone who works in the US has bought US bonds without even realizing it. Deductions made in paycheck for social security in part invests in US treasuries
