I mean, you could if you really wanted to make the claim that editing and engineering supersedes the song, which feels like an odd argument. I don’t deny that editing, production, and engineering are valuable, but it’s also not as if they only happen in the studio: every live performance is calibrated for that setting, which is just a different style/venue than something that’s purely designed in a studio. But at the end of the day, no raw material, nothing to edit or tweak and I personally don’t mind when something is imperfect and can also appreciate when something is perfectly calibrated. I also do think that there is a certain energy that can be lost when something is overproduced and labored over and definitely appreciate the kinetic energy of live performance (spontaneity, variety between performances, the energy between performers, discovering new aspects of the material etc.). Ultimately, I don’t really think there’s such a thing as a *definitive* version of a song when it’s regularly performed live and I feel like fetishizing the studio versions kind of flattens the way music exists from creation to its evolution thru performance.

I respect your opinion but I disagree about there being a "definitive version."

The studio version is the definitive version.

Live renditions are just that: renditions

I would rather appreciate the laborious, intentional work put into crafting the studio version than the often ad-libbed/improvised/altered/sometimes frantic energy of a live version

but different strokes for different folks
