Honestly Die With A Smile makes much more sense on the Harlequin album, while Happy Mistake makes much more sense on Mayhem. Die With A Smile literally is so Joker coded and gives the weird 70s vibe of that movie and is a love song like the movie is a weird love story. Happy Mistake literally talks about broken mirrors and that’s the Mayhem album cover. And conceptually, the album is….a Happy Mistake. lowkey LG7 makes more sense being titled Happy Mistake because it’s an album about how the darkness turns out to be okay after all. You can accept your shards of glass and they can be beautiful. Your mistakes can still lead to a happy ending. That’s what Mayhem is about…not….Mayhem. JAD is such a banger and the closest she's come post The Fame to her banging her foot on the piano at the Bitter End and I love everything about that song! OT tho, her writing is wonky a many of times. "Look into my wishful eyes" makes me clench every time I listen to that song and sometimes I think of her as Tammy Brown in that one untucked, screaming "IM WRITING" when she puts these lyrics down. And then there are these banger lines that I just can't forget. My first tattoo has been on my shoulder "Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch, just smoke my cigarette and hush", with a wooden pipe (Alejandro MV) and I'd say you find more beautiful written moments than cringey, but still, they are there 😅 I made my peace with it and embrace the cheese factor. In the beginning I may have put her too much on a pedestal when it comes to that. Throughout her career there's been a couple of instances where it turned out she had less input then I originally thought (which is totally acceptable in the industry). Sometimes her lyrics can get silly, but it's not that damaging to her artistry though. In fact these silly lyrics are quite present in her old albums too but ignored due to nostalgia and bias of this fanbase. For me it was well-written and for the most time authentic. I also like the lyrics in Paparazzi (dark and ironic) and Love Game - it was done very clever. The Fame Monster as a whole is well-written. Her ability to dream up creations, aesthetics, melodies, and outfits is spectacular. She knows exactly what shes doing and is a prime example of a diva. I agree, but also - it’ll be interesting to see her ongoing evolution as an artist and a songwriter. Madonna just put out amazing album at 66!
