Obviously anecdotal, but I was in Mexico earlier this year and I was at a coffee shop and was being served by a light skinned Argentinian woman. She and I were chatting in Spanish and I made a joke about my Spanish not being great, she laughed about the fact that most Americans don’t even try, I commiserated. Then she randomly took a left turn and said, “no tengo problemas con los Americanos en general, pero no me gustan las personas negras” and my fckn jaw dropped. She said it like it was the most natural thing to say and that she expected me to agree, then started laughing that she doesn’t like black people because “no les gustan pagar para nada.”

This whole thing has been so hard to understand to me. I’m fully aware that it’s unfair to judge an entire country by a really loud and idiotic group of fans, but when I see most argentinians talking about this “hate campaign” on the internet, the lack of self awareness and self criticism as well as the arrogance I’ve seen is just baffling. I’ve seen a bunch of people saying that they are not racist, closely followed by “trepa muros” “come tacos” and “indio” as if I had to feel ashamed of my country’s indigenous roots or its food.

I don’t want to get messy, so I’ll just say that I hope this becomes a humbling experience for some and they learn that there’s a life outside of football.

OT: Rosalía is from Spain. I’d imagine she’d be inclined to be happy for her team.
