Just yesterday I bought the CD of an album that's 22 minutes long.

This is the future of music I’m afraid, we live in an algorithmic society now. That being said if you can get a concept across is a short amount of time I think it’s fine.

And Charli’s pretty artistic and fun I think, she’s proving your prose doesn’t have to rhyme or be overtly linguistic. You can get as much from her intro to Wink Wink about the song as you can from Gaga singing ARTPOP’s chorus imo.

Also no; there’s actually a formula to what constitutes a “TikTok” audio reverse engineered into a song. When Did You Get So Hot? By Sabrina is made for TikTok for instance, and in hindsight even Sex Dreams has an inbuilt TikTok sound we don’t realise.

I can’t put my finger on it, but the whole perspective/ angle she’s going for on this album seems to be so… contrived? Like she’s trying to be subversive after Crash and Brat and it just isn’t landing instead of organically trying something different

Id argue this is much closer to how she used to be before Crash just on a different scale, we have to remember she’s made Electropop/Dance music for over 10 years now and she’s now moving back towards the electroclash and rock music she started out with and grew up loving. I mean since her debut she’s talked about how much she loved The Velvet Underground.

I think the problem has become that pop fans are too parasocial, because she had one successful pop era; people expect her to continue with that sound or message because that’s how pop works. If it works once, it becomes a trend and artists follow it until the trend shifts. Instead she’s following her own path — she’s achieved the success she fought for by making the music she knew would sell, now she’s going back to the “real” her, kinda like what Nicki Minaj did with her pop album before retreating to rap only again.

The difference is however, Charli has told people for years she follows her own likes and dislikes; she had a phase of loving nightclubbing so she made Brat for instance. Now she’s back in her OG tumblr girl era (we forget she was one of the 3 tumblr girls back in the day). As a fan it feels cathartic to see she still wants to make music we fell in love with from her.

Yeah, this is what I find the most annoying about the discourse surrounding this album. People are talking about the singles as if she’s gunning for Top 40 when she’s legitimately just doing whatever she wants. I’m not saying that means people have to like it, but at least judge it on the basis of what it’s trying to be.

I think sadly it’ll spread beyond just mainstream music purely because almost everyone wants to be famous whether they make “pop” music or not and shorter songs means more streams.

I think Brat was a testament to marketing and branding because it was so viral and in the zeitgeist that people forget the singles weren’t actually THAT successful. Like the album was a cultural moment more than it was a commercial success moment.

This is a view I don't want to subscribe to, it's too cynical in my eyes.

I don't think there will ever be a shortage of artists that don't adhere to the trend-chasing formula.
