Charli said even before brat she was just gonna make what she wants now, also I can totally see her being a trend setter still sonically — she’s already had a viral trend from her album cover after all. We’re in a very cynical era of society so the pop music is gonna reflect that next I think. Rock inspired music is definitely gonna make a comeback.

I foresee pop rock becoming big again next, then some form of dance music will get a revival when recession pop comes back.

I just don’t really think the “Khia Asylum” label fits artists with cult followings who don’t really aim to be mainstream. I can see why the label gets applied to artists like Ava Max and Bebe Rexha because they’re obviously gunning for Top 40, but Charli seems fine with being a semi-underground pop artist (and I think, as you implied, probably prefers it).

What is Khia Asylum if not entire pop music these days?

Miley Cyrus’s last album was a huge flop.  Sabrina Carpenter couldn’t give Madonna a big hit. Harry Styles didn’t have hits on his latest album (Aperture started strong but then left charts almost immediately). 

Everyone’s in pop world flopping: Benson Boone, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga (yes - I’m looking at The Dead Dance and Runway), Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Lizzo of course. 

Pop music industry changed dramatically in the past 5 years, and we need to rethink the whole “success/flop” thing. 

Just because Carly Rae hasn’t had big hits since Call Me Maybe - doesn’t make her a Khia prisoner.

Everyone’s becoming a “niche” artist these days - because albums don’t sell anymore, there is a ton of music out there, streaming numbers are constantly manipulated. Barely anyone is “mainstream” anymore.

This is why we often call Gaga the last true popstar because her peak happened just before the rise of streaming. And thus nobody has had the impact she has had on culture and music since — one that was authentic. Yes Swift has become massive BUT she’s not become culturally influential beyond causing a conversation around capitalism because of her (or her label’s) constant manipulation of her success from re-recording her most successful albums to creating panic buying with 48 hour exclusive variants.
