Omg, this looks so good! I'd say it's a response to the success of K-Pop Demon hunters, but the production would have been well underway by the time KPDH surprised everyone. I'm sure they've changed their promotion plans, though!

Very excited to go see this!

Ngl I'm still upset that they changed the main character from a boy to a girl. I love magic and witchcraft, but aside from Wiccan in Marvel, I don't think there's a whole lot of famous boy witches in media. I would've loved to see Disney go in that direction, but I feel like they didn't because it very clearly has queer undertones and metaphors :selena:

It’s cute. Who is gonna redo the trailer and change the song from Miley’s “Midnight Sky” to Abra?

I was also hoping for a boy led Disney movie since the last one (Strange World) was a big flop, but I think female leads tend to work better and are safer for them at the box office.  Perhaps that’s the reason behind the change. I’m excited though, it looks really cool and I love all the witchcraft and magic related themes. Definitely gonna see it.

Yeah, female leads tend to do better for Disney. Also, I feel like the whole magic/witchcraft thing is definitely riding off of WandaVision, and maybe to some extent, Agatha All Along.

It’s a catch 22 I’m afraid, they’ll complain there’s female led movies but also say that the theme of this is “too girly” for a boy lead. It would’ve been nice for them to have a queer animated movie but Disney likes to keep it’s relationship with right wing countries like China intact for box office sake.

I don't think they'd complain that it's female-led. Princess movies are Disney's main thing, so this is in line with every other female-led/princess-y type movie they've ever done. I really think they just switched it from a boy to a girl because, like you said, witches might seem "too girly."

To be fair, they did try a couple of times to have queer representation on their animated films, and the first time people were ready to burn Burbank for a 2 second lesbian kiss. The second time they did have a male gay lead character in Strange World, but nobody watched that movie because it was too “woke” So, yeah, Elsa having a girlfriend is not happening anytime soon.
