I could entertain the idea that KPop is distinctive and big enough to have its own category, but racializing it rubs me the wrong way. In the end its just pop in korean, truest inclusion would be for it to compete in the normal categories. Its the same case when they made Contemporary Country Album a thing. While it could be inclusion in a sense that its giving them a table on the room, its also simultaneously saying you can't sit with the "normal western acts". I get both sides I get that, i've personally never really entertained K-Pop or J-Pop and the only songs i've heard just sound like rehashes of old western Pop/R&B and Dancepop music from the early 2000s or early 2010s. BTS fans also had a massive crash out when they (deservedly) lost a GRAMMY to the biggest collab of that year (Gaga & Ari). I think the inclusion of a new category is just telling of the times, that there's clearly enough music for all these new categories to be recognised. Also can't wait for Gaga to win Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Taylor will probably win in the Folk category too at some point. Tbf it is a form of gatekeeping and exclusion

Best Asian Performance seems like a cop out because the Academy refuses to recognize Kpop in their typical categories. Its segregation disguised as progress lowkey. Most k-pop songs suck so why should they be nominated for a grammy? When something good comes out from k-pop field maybe they will nominate it

I agree that Kpop hasn't been strong enough in the past to compete against western acts
