REALITY 80,022
3 hours ago, Ladle Ghoulash said: I think the difference has more to do with intent and framing, tbh. ARTPOP was clearly aiming for being sonically cutting edge, so when it sounds familiar or very of its time musically, that intent can be weighed against the familiarity of the music, whereas music that is retro is usually deliberately gunning to sound like stuff from the past, so if it sounds like a quality recreation of the 80s, it’s doing its job right. That's fair, but it's all subjective at the end of the day. I don't think ARTPOP's production sounds dated, even looking at it through the lens of wanting it to be "sonically cutting edge." Like I said, if anything, I think it stays ahead of its time, which is validated by the fact that it's become a cult classic. The whole "retro" vs "dated" debate still comes down to semantics imo. Because, yes, while "retro" music usually intends to sound like stuff from the past, you could just as easily apply the "dated" label to that if you—as the listener—simply don't like that kind of stuff. When you hear or read about music critiques, you rarely see people critique something using "retro" in a negative way. It's usually "dated." Sneaky Oliver 22,931
The way he said she’s a “maker” really resonated with me… I totally get what he meant. The thing with Gaga’s discography is that there are cracks, there are flaws but you can tell she’s the one who made them and that’s the beauty of it, it’s not overly produced or extremely polished into perfection, it’s rather organic and natural

gagzus 21,647
For the ARTPOP discourse, I stand by it was in fact not like the EDM that was on radio. In fact the type of EDM Gaga was making was so full of references from subgenres that weren't on radio till almost a decade after. And i firmly stand on the hill that without ARTPOP -- there's no PC Music -- without PC Music there's no SOPHIE -- without SOPHIE there's no brat. Did the "concept" get lost in translation? Absolutely, the album had like 5 different concepts she spoke about between 2011-2013. (The Decay of the Blonde Superstar, A Disney Princess in a Rave, a Celebration of Born This Way, a Magnum Opus and finally, Putting ART culture into POP music -- referencing PopArt and Warhol). For the structure, yes songs like GUY, Donatella sounds like a Zedd song from his non commercial songs, but it doesn't sound remotely like Clarity which was his only hit song at the time -- and Break Free sounds nothing like GUY either. Funnily enough Swine sounds like a Zedd song despite it not being one, which is kind of proof to me Gaga didn't need Zedd at all on the album. Nothing on radio nor any song Gaga's made sounds like Aura -- it is (to me) the peak of her experimentation in music in general. The era itself was foiled by so much interference that we know in hindsight. Singles changing, last minute video plans, disregard for her well being after her hip broke, the works. Madeon and (technically) infected mushroom produced the most interesting songs on ARTPOP (Aura, MJH) for me they feel like early ideas of how she envisioned Mayhem. In fact ARTPOP could have been called Mayhem tbh it makes more sense. But Mayhem is her entire ethos evolved and refined. I don't think the music sounds dated personally, especially since a lot of Synthpop and Dancepop is back in fashion in music again. And i also stand by that had she stuck to her guns and continued to make Electronic Dance Music exclusively, she could've become the queen of electronic music and worked with so many experimental people by now. But longevity and legacy matter to her.
heymacarenaglove 8
It was a dissapointing album when it came out because she used to be Ahead of the sound of pop music, and people would copy her, but this didnt land the same way Has some fun songs though
