Back in 2014, you couldn't even have a proper discussion about this album without somebody shooting non stop with "DATED", "NOISY", "ARTFLOP", remarks.

Personally I love dates. They’re sweet, chewy, and a great natural source of sugar and substitute for cane!

I have a huge bias for ARTPOP because it was the album that made me a little monster. I was also 13 at the time and didn't have a good understanding of music at all, so take this with a grain of salt, but I never thought the production sounded "dated" If anything, I thought the album's aged incredibly well. Not only sonically, but it's definitely much more appreciated by people now than it was back then.

Also, like Starmie25 said, the word "dated" has kinda lost its meaning. I feel like it's just a way to describe something you don't like. Because if you truly liked it, you'd use a word like "retro" or "throwback," since "dated" has such a negative connotation.

No shade, sister, but how could it possibly be retcon when I and many others at the time felt it sounded dated upon release?

At least it was that way with the critics. I don't understand how people feel it was dated when this happened:

2013 - Sweet Nothing, I Need Your Love, Neon Lights, etc.

2014 - Break Free, Lovers on the Sun, etc.

2015 - I Want You to Know, Where Are Ü Now, Cool for the Summer, Faded, etc.

2016 - Don't Let Me Down, River, Closer, etc.

2017 - Something Just Like This, Stay, etc.

Sure, EDM wasn't as popular as it was back in 2012, but it still had hits for years after 2013. Plus, Lady Gaga was doing white girl trap years before Ariana and Halsey made it trendy. ARTPOP was mainly ahead of its time in terms of concept but putting ART in front of POP and calling out corporatism and capitalism, among other things.

I 100% maintain that the era is the best part of ARTPOP, so I don’t disagree about this part. But I do think that, looking out into the broader world of EDM, very little of ARTPOP (aside from maybe Aura and Venus) felt especially fresh to me. It’s also not as if it’s horrendously dated (I think if it had come out in 2012 it would’ve been more on the cutting edge), but it feels particularly relative to the ambition of the concept.

I think the difference has more to do with intent and framing, tbh. ARTPOP was clearly aiming for being sonically cutting edge, so when it sounds familiar or very of its time musically, that intent can be weighed against the familiarity of the music, whereas music that is retro is usually deliberately gunning to sound like stuff from the past, so if it sounds like a quality recreation of the 80s, it’s doing its job right.

Okay I can see this. I think the "simplicity" of some songs on ARTPOP came from the album being a response to Born This Ways reception, like with how she said she wanted to show a "lack of maturity" in response to people saying that BTW was too serious. It was like what she said recently with how she would do what people asked, but then twist it to still fit what she wants and confuse the public. Donatella is a good example by being less serious, but still twisting it for people by going all for some of what people hate in the high fashion world.
