Jill 31,812 Posted June 2 Share Posted June 2 (edited) I hate the NYT as much as the next person, and while the previous title was problematic so I can see why they changed it, I just read the column and it's not an anti-gay column, nor a "'straight fundamentalist" one (it doesn't say being straight is better than being gay at all). You can point out some issues (it's needlessly provocative in some ways), but generally it talks about the difficulty both genders have in understanding each other (in the context of a heterosexual relationship) resulting from political and sociocultural divisions, and others causes. This causes something very visible nowadays, which is loneliness in heterosexual women and men (especially men) and the shrinking hope of finding fulfillment in a partner or significant other. This relates to the mental health crisis no doubt. I think this is a valuable topic to discuss, and its by no means a denial of homosexuality, although I understand the optics of publishing this with that title on June 1st. The column says the following: "Heteropessimism isn’t just for women. Men like the white nationalist Nick Fuentes and the Tate brothers — influencers who are accused of human trafficking and rape — also promote a form of heteropessimism. Their basic argument is that women are not worth the time or are something to dominate and discard, that there is something wrong with them and men are better off alone", which is more a discourse related to toxic expectations in relationships (caused by societal changes) than a jab on gays.
