Ngl completely disagree. In funky big band, the idea that there’d be interplay between a vocal hook and an instrumental hook is way more common and isn’t stigmatized the way it is in electropop (the build up in Stevie Wonder’s Superstition leading into the funky instrumental hook comes to mind).

This was one of the reasons i dont like it, but the verses of Stupid Love and the production win over HML for me. You can tell SL was made in early sessions of the album, whereas you can tell HML was the last song made.

I also feel like people miss that because Stupid Love basically has two pre-choruses (“Freak out, freak out” and “All I ever wanted was love”), then chorus of SL operates more lik a post-chorus drop like the “Replay, re-replay” part of Replay, so it’s not even like you were cheated out of a “chorus” because the song has three sequential hook sections lol

It's sad that Stupid Love is rated this low by the fanbase. It's one of the most interesting and unique songs in the album. I believe the part of reason why it's overhated is its atrocious music video that had the potential to be a visually satisfying video but was shot in an iPhone
