It's giving billionaire landlord delivering a moving speech about housing inequality while standing in front of all the buildings his family spent centuries buying up. Maybe let's not treat basic empathy like a groundbreaking revelation or hand out medals to an institution for slowly sanding down the very problems it helped normalize. Equally though, plenty of counter-cultural movements have originated from within religious schism. The Quaker movement was one of the leading early proponents of pacifism, abolition, penal reform and even in their early days in the 17th century allowed women to take on positions of authority within the movement and their ideals very similar to what humanism became in the 19th and 20th centuries. Chartists formed their own churches to push back against the Anglican church attempting to surpress working class political organisation in the UK and promoted the separation of church and state. Tolstoyism was rooted in christian thought and inspired Christian anarchism and were cited by Gandhi, MLK and James Bevel. Abrahamic religious morality is one of the bedrocks from which ethical socialism, social democracy, keynesianism, and Fabianism formed. Basic empathy shouldn't be groundbreaking. But we live in a world where people are openly bragging about comitting the most heinous of crimes and are supported by multi-million or even billion dollar funding from numerous groups and nations. So sadly, we absolutely should support those who choose basic empathy. Edited May 26 by Bronco The gays know how to party

Not sure if you’ve seen the world recently, but it is, unfortunately, a revolutionary position given that most institutions of power fail to recognize it. Head Empty 26,963
Has institutionalized religion caused irreparable harm to the world? Yes. Is it still traumatizing and abusing a lot of people? Yes. Do their leaders say a few nice things occasionally? Yes. I still don't trust them though

tomsches 17,550
I don’t Like the pope or the catholic church but he‘s right. We need to at least regulate it more. Now is the time to do something or else in 2 generations we will be stuck with people Running the world who have grown up all their lives not knowing anything themselves. For them it will be considered ancient to try to memorise information. How can you be a critical thinker if you don’t know anything?
