Starting to get into Janet Jackson recently, and I'd admit, I really don't know her discography as well as other artists from that era.

The songs I do know:
Control

What have you done for me lately

Nasty

Miss you much

Rhythm nation

Escapade

If

That's the way love goes

Velvet Rope

You

Got til it's gone

Together Again

All for You

Based on what I have heard, I definitely lean more toward her R&B stuff more than the jackswing/pop, so I'd assume Velvet Rope would be a good place to start - but her albums are SOOO long so what tracks should I start with?

Come on Get Up

Doesn't Really Matter

Black Cat

All Nite

This is a very controversial take, but I would argue Janet had more longevity as an album artist than MJ tbh.

Any Time, Any Place (1993) and I Get Lonely (1997) are two hit ballads of hers with R&B going on. You’ll mostly want to start at her 1993 album janet. as the two before it are loaded with New Jack Swing on most upbeat tracks.

Oooooooooo you should listen to her best albums “Janet.” and “The Velvet Rope”, but some of my favorite songs by her are:

- Feedback

- That’s The Way Love Goes

- Go Deep

- Any Time, Any Place

- 70's Love Groove

- Rope Burn

- Runway

- Doesn’t Really Matter

- Someone To Call My Lover

I personally think her albums are the way to go because she is pretty thoughtful about transitions and interludes, and I would start at Control and go chronological. I think it makes the most sense + you see her evolution over time and how and why she changed RnB to the degree that she did. Like, given your tastes, i wouldn't start with Velvet Rope bc the others you might not like quite as much.

But I hear you, her albums are long af. What I did was put them on while I cleaned or did a long shower or bath. It was nice *because* they were long and gave you a lot of time where you don't need to change songs.

I think I would almost agree with this tbh. MJ only really tried to have a "theme" with Dangerous and HIStory but even then, each song was an individual stepping stone on the story. Otherwise, songs were placed in the tracklist based on feeling. ",We had this big dance track, let's slow it down for a second, now let's pick it back up, now let's leave the album off with this mood" type of thing.

But Janet, with her interludes and consistent theming in nearly every album, really should be listened to from track 1 and allowed to play until the album is over

That's how I prefer to listen to music, anyway. It's why she's one of my absolute favorites. Being MJ's sister is actually pretty far down the list of reasons why :icant:

OT: "The Velvet Rope" is peak Janet imo but her last album, "Unbreakable", is severely underrated as well. I don't think you have a choice but to press play and pick out what you like :ladyhaha:

1000% she did. A viable and important career from 1986 - 2001ish and a bump in 2008. Now, I do think we're biased a bit as gay people bc ofc she matters more, but I think Michael's impact is certainly felt on the industry, but I would agree that Janet's impact—though less spoken of because of the blacklisting after the super bowl.

I'd say he had about the same number of hits as she did, maybe a couple more, but I do think that when the dust settles, her longevity is the same if not more by virtue of the fact that if nothing else she has more beloved albums than he does. He has, basically, Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. The albums after were less favorably received even if they had some big singles here and there. Janet has Control, RN, Janet., VR, AFY, and Discipline.
